Here at PH we always have your best interests at heart, and in these harsh economic times this week's Shed is all about bang-per-buck. The Toyota Supra was a fairly cheap way to go fast back in the late 80's, and now a top-spec 3.0-litre Turbo version can be had for under a grand.
We're talking here about the MKIII version, which was the first Supra not to have 'Celica' in its title when it was launched in 1986. Initially the car was only available as a 3.0 with the turbo version arriving a year later. According to this website the MKIII was never officially imported into the UK and those cars that are here were all privately imported. To be honest, we aren't completely convinced by this but we know that PHers will know the facts and post accordingly.
Most imported MKIII Supras tend not to be too bad on rust, provided they've been treated well and this one seems nice and solid. A turbo model won't cost you any more than the 3.0, so the turbo is the one to seek out. Power when new was around 230bhp, but the car was known for being easy to tune and many examples were fettled considerably.
Supras are pretty well-equipped, and this weeks shed is no exception with electric windows and mirrors, alloy wheels, blue leather upholstery and, as is the case more often than not, an automatic gearbox. The mileage on this one isn’t too bad for a car fast approaching 2-decades old, and as it’s a Toyota it should be pretty reliable too.
For the money, you can't really complain with this can you? Toyota reliability, RWD, turbocharged 230bhp engine and decent equipment levels. All this for a shade under a grand and there are probably cheaper cars around if you search for them. Seek out one with a manual gearbox and this is surely shed motoring at its best?
