Gemballa is not known for doing things by halves, and hasn't now for almost 40 years. Not familiar?
See it's 911-derived Cyrrus
- not exactly subtle, even by the standards of 1987. The Leonberg-based tuner describes themselves as "famous for the most innovative, unusual, extreme, expensive and exclusive vehicle conversions", which sounds about right given their previous work.
Even so, this Avalanche 4x4 looks pretty bonkers. Loosely based on the 820hp Avalanche seen at Geneva in 2017, a car that is to be launched this year in an "exclusive small series", the 4x4 is a vehicle design that Gemballa is apparently a design that has been "in the drawer for a long time." And just so happens to be revealed to the world 36 hours after another modified Porsche 911 with off-roading in mind. Draw your own conclusions there.
But even the Ruf isn't as wild as this. Here there's proper ride height, tyres that looks like they're off a Raptor, serious body protection and - this still being a Gemballa, after all - a ginormous rear wing. You would think, surely, that no manufacturer could productionise this, but then nobody thought that a tuner would touch the Carrera GT, or give a Cayenne 750hp, or modify a Panamera... there are no limits as far as Gemballa is concerned. And this looks like one of their most exciting projects yet.
Elsewhere, Gemballa is doing what Gemballa does best. Its 800hp 911 project is being further worked on for more than 1000hp and a 230mph+ top speed; a new Tornado based on the Cayenne is coming; and the hypercar project is said to continue apace. Related to which, Gemballa is now dividing up its work into three new departments: Hypercar Division, Luxury Customisation Division and Gemballa Classics Division. The aim is to introduce more structure, it's said, as Gemballa expands its model offerings over the next two years. Which is most certainly going to begin with that Avalanche 4x4, right guys?
