The 'concept' term was very loosely applied to last year's Golf GTI TCR; VW may have called it "a new milestone" for the brand, but it looked very much like a 290hp Golf GTI with some nice options. And now the production TCR is here... looking rather like a 290hp Golf GTI with some nice options. Still, that sounds like rather a nice combination, the Mk7 Golf GTI having proved itself has a thoroughly good hot hatch over the past half a dozen years.
Now described as "derived from the racing car of the same name", the TCR is capable of 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds, no doubt helped by the standard DSG (no manual is available); the top speed is 155mph, which can be raised to 162mph. Standard equipment for the TCR includes the VAQ differential lock as found on the Golf GTI Performance, "premium front sport seats" and perforated brake discs.
Marking out the TCR from other GTIs are 18-inch 'Belvedere' wheels, black mirror caps, sill extensions, front splitter, TCR roof spoiler and, believe it or not, TCR puddle lights. Cost extras include the honeycomb decor and 19-inch wheels seen on this car, carbon mirror caps and a black roof. Options pack bring together the DCC dampers and the Vmax upgrade, or with more track ready tyres.
UK TCR prices are expected soon; in its home market the car will cost €38,950 (£34,500 at present), with the wheel and damper upgrade at €2,350 (£2k); add the tyres and 'Pretoria' instead of 'Reifnitz' wheels instead and it's €3,200 (£2,800) more than standard. Following the spec, the TCR should be priced between a DSG Performance Pack (£31,100) and the equivalent R (£33,085), though don't be surprised to find it costing a little more - further details soon!
