The best threads from Readers' Cars involve a good story as well as a good car, and that of PHer Notwen - about how he came to own two W202 C-Class AMGs - is an especially nice one. Particularly as it involves a very interesting engine transplant...
Anyway, in the beginning, Notwen - also known as Gareth - wanted a C36 AMG. Having, by his own admission, "kissed a few frogs" in his search, he found the silver car you see here. Once owned by Tom Warburton (of the bread family, yes), it was also notable for keeping its cloth seats - surely very rare at the time. After one slight drama which we'll let Gareth explain, the car was his, and the excellent 'C36 AMG' numberplate not long after.
The C-Class has been used as a course car at Oulton Park and on a trip to Le Mans, with Gareth bolstering the history as well as the mileage along the way. But he wanted to tinker. And with the C36 "too nice to mess with", he found the dark blue W202...
A slightly damaged, slightly rusty C43 at the other end of the country would have been a risk in first place; one with a E55 5.4-litre engine transplant only added to the jeopardy. But the latent potential was too much to ignore, and now Gareth owns that AMG C-Class as well!
We'll hand the story back over to him now; suffice it to say he's been busy sorting out his fixer upper C-Class which it's well worth hearing about it. Gareth, we salute your commitment to the classic AMG cause - we look forward to seeing more updates!
