This can’t be a coincidence. On the same day that the reviews go live on the latest and greatest Porsche 911 Turbo S, AMG just so happens to release the first testing images of its V8 GT Track Sport - the car that aims to be faster than any 911 around a circuit. Even though it’s just a few pictures of a disguised car, with no additional details beyond what was shared back in the summer, this means attention is diverted away from the uber Porsche for just a minute. And that’ll matter. When it seemed like the only battle bothering Porsche and AMG these days was making ever crazier EVs that nobody really wants, it’s nice to know that the 911 and GT duel still matters.
As a reminder, the ‘most impressive offshoot of the GT family’ will retain the 4.0-litre V8 that’s found in most of the rest of the range, with anything from 476hp all the way beyond 800 in the E Performance. It isn’t obvious yet whether the Track Sport will employ the standard twin-turbo engine or use a hybrid setup; given the path followed by the 911 Turbo, with more weight from electrification but even more performance on top, battery assistance for the V8 seems likely.
AMG reckons this Track Sport has a ‘further optimised weight balance’ (ditching the old GT’s transaxle had nudged it forward for this era) as well as a ‘sophisticated aerodynamic architecture’. As with the very racy variants of the other Stuttgart sports cars in recent times, there’s going to be absolutely no mistaking this Track Sport for any other GT. Even against the old GT R Pro and Black Series, the aero on display here is seriously extreme, more akin to a bona fide competition car than something streetable. The rear wing makes any other GT spoiler look timid, and the front splitter looks straight from one of the GT2 racers. This must be a wider GT, too, all the better for high-speed stability (and cramming in ludicrously large tyres).
Chairman of the AMG board, Michael Schiebe, said: With the Concept AMG GT Track Sport, we are once again exploring the limits of what is possible. We have a world-class team working on this concept with incomparable AMG spirit. It takes us to the physical and driving dynamics limit.” All of which would suggest Team Affalterbach might not be content even with surpassing the 911 at the Nordschleife; maybe it could be the fastest AMG there ever, surpassing the 6:29.090 of the One last year. That would be a statement of intent, and we’d put nothing past them when there’s a mission in mind; the old AMG GT was never considered as track car royalty, right until the Black Series blew the rest of the competition away. One thing’s for certain: 2026 looks like being a vintage year as far as Nurburgring lap times are concerned.
