We've known it was coming since the latest pairing launched in 2019, but Porsche has now confirmed the introduction of a PDK option to its 718 GT4 and Spyder models. PDK-equipped versions of the 420hp 4.0-litre flat-six models will arrive first on US roads in early 2021, with right-hand drive versions to follow shortly afterwards according to a Porsche UK spokesperson.
It means the hardcore 718 models will for the first time be available with two pedals, something expected to increase their reach for obvious reasons - but not necessarily trigger a major switch in buying habits, particularly in the US, where manuals reign supreme in Porsche's 911 GT models. This side of the Atlantic, however, PDK 'boxes generally represent larger share of demand, so expect the auto option to boost GT4 and Spyder sales.
It's not yet clear how the seven-speed 'box will affect performance, although a shortening of acceleration times seems inevitable given the talents of the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. In manual guises the GT4 and Spyder both hit 62mph in 4.4 seconds, so we'd expect something closer to the four second mark - although these cars have never really been about launch times. It's no secret that the manual does feature six rangey ratios, however; having the extra gear in the auto should close up the ratios and boost acceleration. Or at least that's what we're expecting, given the evidence of other models.
The introduction of a PDK option further bolsters Porsche's flat-six-powered 718 range, with the lesser-powered 4.0 GTS - which PH drove earlier this year - set to arrive on roads in the coming weeks. Both the Cayman and Boxster versions of that car are presently six-speed manual only, with their PDK versions due before 2020's close. Suffice it to say, then, that anybody disgruntled at the four-cylinder 718 era has precious little cause for complaint now - there's a flat-six, mid-engined Porsche for everyone!
