You know what you're going to get with an Akrapovic exhaust. Titanium pipes are never going to come cheap, but the quality of their systems means Akra exhausts are found on all manner of road and race cars. Plus bikes, too, of course.
The popularity of the GR Yaris, as well as the performance gains possible with an exhaust for a turbo engine, made an Akrapovic system inevitable. This video is our first look and listen at what's coming from the Slovenian company for Toyota's hot hatch hero.
The numbers are encouraging, with another 18hp and 15lb promised alongside removing 5kg, but it's the noise that most will be interested in. Not that there's anything wrong with the regular GR's parpy soundtrack, of course, but this proves it can be even better. Imagine the next Fast & Furious hero car was an Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio and that will give you some idea: the chuffs, whistles and sneezes of the turbo triple remain, only now with a much more aggressive (and vocal) rasp on full throttle. It sounds great.
Akrapovic's work here is comprised of an Evolution Link Pipe and Titanium Slip-On Race Line, with three resonators for "fully enhancing the engine's character with a deep and enthusiastic sound." Those pipes, for those interested, are said to be 'megaphone-shaped'.
Which is all well and good, but there is a price to pay for all this three-cylinder excitement. And not just what the RRP turns out to be. Buyers just after the slip-on won't need to do anything more, but anyone interested in the full system will also need an ECU remap - it gets rid of the particulate filter, too. And in large capitals for both reads a warning: "THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT MEET EMISSION COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR STREET OR HIGHWAY USE." Ah. Which would rather limit the popularity of Akrapovic's exhaust for now, given there aren't many dedicated GR track cars just yet. But then this may also be the start of development for a less racy, more street suitable system to follow. Akrapovic certainly wouldn't be short of customers with a GR that sounds something like this available...
