Porsche’s finally done it. A 911 GT3 Cabriolet has seemed inevitable for the longest time, with in-house discussions going back as far as the 997 era - but it’s taken until now for the S/C to fill the convertible-sized hole in the GT range. Having been to Stuttgart to see it in the metal, we’re kicking off today’s episode of The Gassing Station podcast with a deep dive on the latest GT3 derivative and how a pair of old prototypes served as the catalyst for the S/C making production.
Of course, we’ve been speaking to Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger to get his take on the new S/C and some of the clever tricks that went into its development. A self-proclaimed “cabriolet guy”, Mr Preminger would later find himself being grilled by Sam and I about his superb 993 Carrera Cab over lunch. No surprise that it’s been built using only Porsche parts and has been given a once-over by the GT team, but what might catch you off guard is his all-American family mobile and the car he’s eyeing for his next project.
At the risk of being labelled Porschetonheads again, we’ve got a buying challenge that steers clear of Stuttgart’s offerings in favour of big, powerful and practical daily drivers. Geester169 has £30,000 to spend on a replacement for their Mercedes CLS, and fancies something “sportier" with a “large boot for cases”. With reliability and running costs seemingly of no concern, Sam has chosen this low-mile E60 BMW M5, which has been uprated with a set of fully adjustable KW coilovers, all for £26,995. My Jaguar XFR-S looks surprisingly sensible by comparison, though it’s putting out more power at 550hp and is almost a decade newer. It’s also more expensive at £29,925, but that’s still an awful lot of car for the money. If, however, you think you can do better, you can drop your suggestions into the topic here.
Last but not least, we head into Blue_haddock’s ‘crap cars from history that you secretly love’, which is jam-packed with crusty gems. Each page is packed with truly unexceptional machines, from the Reliant Rialto to the Rover 45, while the Austin Princess gets a few too many mentions if you ask me. The topic is still in its infancy, so have a think about what you’d put forward while listening to the pod and then get stuck in.
