A new statement released by the Red Bull Honda World Superbike team has sadly announced that Nicky Hayden succumbed to his injuries sustained during a bike ride last Wednesday. His fiancee, mother and brother Tommy were at his side when he passed away. His brother stated, "On behalf of the whole Hayden family and Nicky's fiancee Jackie I would like to thank everyone for their messages of support - it has been a great comfort to us all knowing that Nicky has touched so many people's lives in such a positive way.
"Although this is obviously a sad time, we would like everyone to remember Nicky at his happiest - riding a motorcycle. He dreamed as a kid of being a pro rider and not only achieved that but also managed to reach the pinnacle of his chosen sport in becoming World Champion. We are all so proud of that." Nicky Hayden, the former MotoGP World Champion and current Honda WSB rider, has been seriously injured in an accident while training on his bicycle. American-born Hayden, who took the 2006 GP title, was riding with friends in Rimini, Italy, when a car collided with him.
According to local reports, Hayden impacted against the car's bonnet and windscreen and has been taken to Rimini hospital with head and chest trauma, where he remains in a serious condition. Honda WSBK team Tweeted only to confirm that Nicky was in an accident and is receiving treatment.
A statment from the Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team on Nicky Hayden's condition has been released stating, "Nicky Hayden's clinical condition remains extremely critical. The young man, who is still in the intensive care unit of Cesena's Bufalini hospital, has suffered a serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage.The prognosis remains reserved."
