Mortimer and Ellis flew at Brands
Alex Mortimer and Bradley Ellis scored the first victory for the Team RPM Viper at Brands Hatch on Saturday in a thrilling lights-to-flag victory - finishing just ahead of the Barwell Motorsport Aston Martin of Tom Alexander and Michael Bentwood. In the GTC class it was an all Porsche affair with David Ashburn and Phil Keen stepping onto the top of the podium.
The Team RPM pair became the sixth different winners in six rounds of the British GT Championship.
On Sunday, the pair repeated the feat to became the first drivers to win two races in the 2007 championship, finishing ahead of the CiM Ferrari of Hector Lester and Allan Simonsen. The Barwell Aston Martin DBRS9 of Guy Harrington and Ben de Zille Butler finished 3rd after starting from 12th on the grid forced upon them after an overnight engine change.
The RPM Viper leads the field
The second win promoted Mortimer and Ellis into the championship lead, two points ahead of Tom Alexander, Michael Bentwood, Guy Harrington and Ben de Zille Butler, who are all tied on 37 points.
Third place in class was good enough to give Graeme Mundy and Jamie Smyth the lead in GTC, 6 points ahead of Keith Ahlers and Steve Hyde who took no points from the weekend after engine problems with the Morgan on Saturday. The class win went to Colin Broster and Peter Morris; two podiums in their first weekend of the 2007 season. Andrew Howard and Aaron Scott had a good ending to the weekend with a solid second place.
The next round is the second two-hour race of the 2007 season at Silverstone on the 12th August.
