Tim Bridgeman might have thought the sun was shining just for him at Thruxton this weekend when he took pole-position for rounds three and four of the Porsche Carrera Cup.
But anyone thinking that this would be another weekend dominated by Bridgeman was surprised by the end of the first racing lap when Tim Harvey, after a great start, took the lead. Michael Caine decided it was time to show his hand and pushed hard, passing Bridgeman and closing the gap to Harvey. But a solid Harvey held on, and drove hard to his first victory of the year.
Behind the front group the hard charging didn’t stop. The high-speed circuit saw Robert Lawson snatch a 5th place overall and Pro-Am 1 (non-professional drivers') victory from a slowing Lewis Hopkins. Paul Mace, sporting a smart new matt-black paint scheme, took Pro-Am 2 victory with a fine run.
Caine showed his consistent pace as he took a clear win in Race 4. Behind him, Harvey and Bridgeman began a dogfight which continued for 8 laps of wheel-to-wheel fighting for track space. The aggression reached a peak when Bridgeman found himself off the track, recovering to an eventual fifth-place past the chequered flag.
With little time to breathe after this scrap, Harvey soon found himself in the sights of James Sutton who had been driving quickly and smoothly all weekend. Harvey fought hard and fended him off to the line, leaving Red Line Racing team mate Sutton to take third.
Red Line's other driver Tony Gilham took sixth, racing his way to the Pro Am 1 (non-professional drivers) victory past Tom Bradshaw. Strong competition in this category had drivers scrapping for every inch of track (including some of Thruxton’s high kerbs!), with jumps, spins and last minute position moves leaving Lawson to take second spot on the podium alongside Ollie Jackson in third. Meanwhile, Paul Mace also managed a second victory in Pro Am 2 ahead of Robin Clark.
Next race: Donington Park (Grand Prix Circuit) 15th - 17th May
