Tech 9 Motorsport is mounting a three-car challenge on the 2002 Michelin
Porsche Cup with a driver line-up headed by team boss Phil Hindley. The former
TVR Tuscan champion and GT racer will be joined by Jonathan Rowland and Nick
Staveley in what will be one of strongest teams in the championship.
"It is important for the team to be racing Porsches and the Cup is
going to be very strong this year. It makes good business sense," says
Hindley, whose company specialises in road-going Porsche maintenance and
development. "We're not just a race team, Tech 9 is a thriving road car
business. "
Hindley, who will race the ex-Barbara Armstrong car, will immediately be seen
as a title contender, but does face the prospect of having to find more backing
as the season develops. "I'm taking the bull by the horns. The first
three meetings are at Brands, Oulton and Thruxton, and they are some of my
favourite tracks. We need to get some strong early results to try and get
sponsors for the rest of the season," says Hindley.
Rowland was overall BMW champion in 1998, before racing in TVR Tuscans with
Tech 9 and competing in selected GT races last year. He will drive the ex-Adrian
Slater car, while Staveley will race the ex-Carlin Motorsport car that was raced
by Vincent Radermecker last year in the Porsche Supercup. "I know
Jonathan will be quick as he has raced with our team for the last couple of
years," says Hindley. "I'm confident that Nick will be very
competitive given his previous achievements. He was runner-up to Neil Cunningham
in the Marcos Mantis Challenge, so he will be strong as well."
"We see this as a multi-year commitment to the Porsche Cup,"
continued Hindley. "We want to get some good results for the team so
that we can run a strong driver line-up again in future seasons. It is very
important for our road car customers to see the team winning, so I'm taking this
very seriously. But it's going to be tough as there are some quick drivers out
there. I'm really looking forward to a full season of racing and challenging for
the title."
