Plenty of people are strapping cameras to their cars these days be it for track days or full on racing. It's a harsh environment though so if you're serious about filming your exploits you need to choose your kit carefully.
Goldstar Racing have been filming their on track exploits for some years now. Whilst racing in Historic Formula 2 throughout Europe they have developed a system which can cope with the harsh environment and produce quality footage just like you see on the telly.
Both their one camera and two camera system use small full colour, high resolution 'lipstick' cameras with inline microphones which enable you record both what you see and what you hear on the track. To avoid vibration the cameras are specially treated internally which ensures vibration free recording and extends the camera life. The cameras can be positioned either inside the car, say on a roll bar or dash board or even outside the car on a wing mirror or for that spectacular view inside an air intake or front spoiler.
The cameras themselves are powered by their own small power pack using rechargeable batteries or they can be powered up through a transformer connected direct to the car battery. Pictures and soundtrack are recorded directly onto the latest Sony digital DV Handycam which you store in your car inside a protective bag which is also supplied. The camera is activated to record using a remote lead.
The unique two camera system enables you to switch views between a front and rear facing camera manually using a two way switcher or you can simply pre-program a suitable dwell/switch time before you leave the pits and the electronic box will do the rest.
The whole kit costs £1695 for the single camera system and £1995 plus VAT for the 2 camera kit and includes everything you need to record your track day fun or racing exploits. You can also use the Sony Handycam off the track too for those 'home videos' ;)
