Much like SUVs, it seems that eSports is slowly but surely forging some degree of validity with the world's sports car manufacturers. The current world situation suits the move, the demand is there, and it gets the brand out to a new, younger audience - see the similarity? Even the purists don't really like the move, making claims about realism, brand authenticity and diluting the message.
Also, much like the SUV world, Porsche moved first (at least in a Covid context), and has been followed by rivals like Bentley, Aston Martin and, today, Lamborghini as well. 'The Real Race' will be played out on Assetto Corsa Competizione, the sim used by Lambo's own Squadra Corse race team, all races will use the Huracan GT3 Evo and every weekend is set to feature commentary from David Coulthard.
The championship kicks off this weekend, with registration open now (and free Assetto Corsa for a weekend) for all experience levels. From now until August there will be five qualifying weekends; the top three from the first and last events, along with the top two from the second, third and fourth, will compete in the final on September 18th, taking place at Lamborghini HQ.
The prize? Three days with Lamborghini, training alongside the Squadra Corse team and driving the real thing. Which is pretty cool.
CEO Stefano Domenicali said: "This is an opportunity for us to combine the excitement of virtual racing with the appeal of Lamborghini cars and our motorsports programme. Esports creates an environment where race heroes and top drivers can be challenged by anyone. This encourages wider engagement with real-life racing, reflected by Lamborghini's investment in this new sports platform."
