It won't have escaped your attention that there's been a fair amount of Audi quattro content on PH, 40 years after it was first seen at the Geneva motor show. Already there's been the video, the retrospective feature and, just this week, a reminder of how cool a 21st century remake might have been.
We make no apology for that. By entirely reshaping the world of rallying and performance road cars single-handedly, the quattro is a hugely significant vehicle. Helps that it's always been a desirable one, too, from Group B icon to fast car hero, from Gene Hunt's prized motor to collectable gold dust as a homologation special. There's a lot of quattro love out there, basically, an affection (addiction?) we're more than happy to encourage.
Here's one doing what it does best, Stig Blomqvist himself at full attack in a Sport quattro on a frozen lake. Prior to the quattro this sort of performance on icy surfaces just wouldn't have been possible. As if to prove the point, Audi won four consecutive Swedish rounds of the WRC in the early 80s, with a second-place finish on the fifth. Which would have been notable enough in and of itself; that the quattro did it in such style, while making such a glorious noise, ensured that the legend was forged amid the snowy forests. So much so, in fact, that people are still talking about it decades later - us included.
