Title contender Elfyn Evans would be challenging Sebastien Ogier and his other World Rally Championship rivals in Argentina this week, were it not for the ongoing coronavirus lockdown. Skoda’s launched a virtual rally eCompetition to help partially fill the sporting void, but naturally nothing compares to the real thing. Especially when the landscape of South America is so bloody spectacular. No amount of video game pixels can replicate it.
Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville took the honours at the 2019 Rally of Argentina, but so close was the competition in early 2020 that a handful of drivers would likely have been in with a shot at gold. Thankfully, with any luck, we might have only a few months to go before the WRC calendar resumes; assuming the pandemic is brought under control, action should re-commence in Kenya in July. Fingers optimistically crossed.
Until then, however, we’ve either Skoda’s gaming competition or, alternatively, a plentiful supply of beautiful imagery and video footage from last year’s rally to help ease the frustration. That’s why for our latest Pic of the Week, we’ve returned to happier times and opted for one of the most stunning shots from the 2019 event, featuring Jari-Matti Latvala’s number 10 Yaris in front of a southern hemisphere sunset. Let’s get back to doing this sort of stuff soon, yeah?
