Expert opinion

The original Continental GT was a significant moment for Bentley. It was the first car to be entirely created under the stewardship of VW. It was also the first Bentley to be created as a mass-production vehicle (okay, not all that mass – this is still a pretty rare car). And it needed to turn a profit – not by any means a given when you look at Bentley’s 20th-century track record.

And even though the motoring press didn’t love it initially – the car was too heavy and not quite fast enough, they felt – the public very much did. You can thank oodles of lavishly trimmed and crafted wood and leather for that, as well as the effortlessly gutsy 560hp W12 engine for that. Bentley also massaged the power output and improved the handling of its GT over the Mk1’s lifetime, so that by the end of its production run the Supersports version was pumping out 630hp.

A second generation arrived in 2011, bringing with it an ‘entry-level’ 4.0-litre V8 version with twin turbos and 500hp, while 2018 saw a significant redesign with the more imposing yet more elegant third-generation model. This time, the press loved it - and with good reason. It's probably the best car Bentley has ever made.
