This car is the ex-works CHEVRON B17C Formula 2 car. CHASSIS NO F2-70-1. The car was built in 1970 to allow Chevron’s works driver Rene Wisell to progress from Formula 3 to Formula 2. At the time Rene Wisell was one of a plethora of talented drives vying to move up from Formula 3 towards Formula 1. The car was raced in 4 races in 1970 with sponsorship from the Swedish company Publicator, listed at the time as being an Advertising Agency but this description was probably to circumvent the true identity as the publisher of pornographic magazines. The Chevron B17C was built as something of a stop gap until the dedicated Chevron B18 Formula 2 car was ready at the end of 1970. Built by Rene Wisell’s mechanic John Bather. Only two of these cars were produced and the other has been highly successful in Historic Formula 2 and Formula Libre.
Raced by Gustaf Dieden in late 1970 the car was acquired by Bobby Howlings and raced in Formula Libre in 1971. The history is unknown until 1974 when it was owned by Uwe Jantzen and used in Formula Libre and speed events until April 1976. The car was advertised by Bobby Howlings in 1978 and raced by Tony Pollock in December 1980 still fitted with an FVA engine. Acquired by Len Bridge as a rolling chassis in the early 1980’s this appears to be when the Cosworth BDD engine was re-built and fitted. Len Bridge raced the car in the HSCC Pre-71 Formula 2 series in 1985. The car was then acquired and raced by Stephen Davis in the same series from 1986-1988 with lots of race documentation available from this period. Stephen Davis kept the car until 2014 when it was acquired by the current owner an Ex-HSCC chairman.
Originally specified with a Cosworth FVA 1600cc engine and Hewland FT200 gearbox, the car has been fully restored using the Cosworth 1600cc BDD engine fitted since the early 1980’s and still with the FT200 Hewland gearbox. This is the specification listed on the FIA papers.
From 2014 to 2017 the car was re-built and refreshed with work done on the Fire Extinguisher System, Racing Harnesses, Brakes, Suspension, Exhaust, Clutch and Gearbox. The Cosworth BDD engine was also re-built in June 2015 and Dyno tested. After this the owner an experienced racing driver carried out a shake down test of the car completing 10 laps on the Silverstone Historic Circuit without problems. The car running very well. The car has not been run since.
The car comes with a spare set of wheels and wet tyres and the all important Body Mould. There is also a full history with the car including over 300 pages and loads of in period photos.
This is an authentic Formula 2 car with a fully documented know history at an incredibly reasonable price which has just been reduced further as an imminent house move means the owner has reduced car storage facilities. It has to be the time to buy
