Volkswagen GOLF GTI 16V (76,000 miles) 1989

We are thrilled to offer this very tidy 76,000 mile MK2 Golf GTi 16v on behalf of a fantastic GQ client.

A hero car of the 1980's the MK2 Golf GTi was one of the best built and most sophisticated hot hatches of the era. The MK2 GTi was introduced in 1983 and built on the success of the MK1, powered by a 1.8l fuel injected engine of 110bhp. However the extra weight of the car over the MK1 blunted the performance and handling, so the 16v was introduced in 1986 raising power to 139bhp, bring the car alive and creating a legend. Revered by motoring journalists and enthusiasts alike the MK2 Golf GTi is now highly collectable and sits at the perfect point between character and usability.

The car we are delighted to offer for sale is lovely low mileage GTi, first registered in 1989 and with 5 previous owners. The car has a lovely history including MOTs, tax disks and service history that support the low mileage. The car was clearly used lightly for the first 20 years of it's life, but was then taken off the road in 2010. Between 2010 and 2023 the car was stored and then renovated by Landbeasts Automobile Classica (classic car restoration and sales in Essex) as a personal project. During this time the team at Landbeasts undertook both mechanical and body/chassis work to the car, which is now in really nice overall condition, but not over restored.

The car is particularly clean underneath and now benefits from full chassis protection. The bodywork is straight and very clean and the interior equally clean with everything working and only a tear to the drivers seat to note (but the car comes with new material for the issue to be addressed). The engine pulls cleanly and smoothly and overall the car drives as a good 1980's hot hatch should.

Purchased by our client from Landbeasts in 2023 so that he could enjoy a hero car from his youth the car has been professionally stored with us for the last 2 years and lightly used. Original, low mileage and unmolested cars of this era are becoming increasingly hard to find and our client searched for several years before finding this one. Recently serviced by Landbeasts and with a fresh MOT (no advisories) the car is ready to be used and enjoyed by the next enthusiast owner.
