VOLKSWAGEN KARMANN 1974 RHD (one of the very last built)
I bought my Karmann Ghia after lusting after one nearly 3 years ago, hot on me having restored a Bay Window VW bus during covid. I had the car trailered down to me in Cornwall from London and it immediately went to my trusted garage team for an overhaul and check over, plus it's first ever MOT. These works came to around £3000 (oddly, it didn't even have any washer jets!)
Shortly after, I had a professional coachtrimmer in Poole, Dorset retrim a pair of 911 seats in alcantara with 'Singer style' button holes. These cost nearly £2000 and look (and feel!) fantastic in the car.
Prior to me having to having bought the car, it had a new engine built and fitted costing nearly £7000 by the VW Engine Company. The engine has done less than 1000 miles since and burbles nicely on brand new 'twin 40's'.
Unfortunately, due to owning 2 businesses and several 'nice cars', and an acreage of land, the Karmann Ghia has sat under a custom made logo-ed soft car cover in my humidity controlled lock up under most of my ownership here in Bude and it's a bit of a waste.
The car: it's one of the last 200 or so ever to run off the production line as I understand, making it really quite rare. It was borne a LHD and converted, professionally, at some stage to a RHD. It has a few 'bubbles' that haven't gotten any worse under my ownership and given it hadn't long been resprayed by a previous owner, makes me wonder if this is in fact a case of water in the paint gun. But then, the car is now over 50 years old.
It has some lovely features to it including some lovely instrument dials and I removed the hub caps to give it a slightly more aggressive stance. I also put on 2 new rear tyres last year and previous owner installed a Diesel heater (which can blow so hot, it's given me a semi-permanent suntan).
You can come and view in my dry and airy storage unit in Bude, Cornwall and sale will include the soft storage cover and a CTEC trickle charger.
Bad bits? Aside from the occasional bubble already mentioned, it had a temperamental gearbox when hot, coming down into 2nd. I had intended putting a Limebug re-built box in using different ratios as I did on my Bay Bus, costing around £1200 or so. I would also at some stage do the floors, as whilst not causing any issues, would make a good car into a REALLY good car.
No dents at all, and it draws attention wherever she goes. She'll also have a new battery by the time you read this.
Please note: no idiots. No PX's (unless you have a Mk2 RS2000 or Mk2 Sport etc) and no offers without coming down to view first. I can arrange trailered transport anywhere in the U.K if required via the guy that ships my stuff all over for me.
