An impeccable Ford Focus RS Mk1 with 10,937 miles and 15 Ford services.
MODEL HISTORY
Inspired by the now Late Colin McRae’s victorious Ford Focus RS World Rally Car, the Ford Focus RS was created as a no frills, no compromise road going rally car, a car true to its motorsport roots. Designed in conjunction with Ford Racing Engineers and M-Sport in Cumbria, the RS badge synonymous with the most desirable, high performance Ford vehicles was first introduced to the already accomplished Focus. Only 4,501 examples were built with only 2,147 sold to the UK market.
EQUIPMENT
Computer optimised unitary welded steel body, rigid occupant safety cell, energy absorbing crumple zones, wider front and rear pressed steel wings, auxiliary air intakes, aerodynamic splitter and rear wing, mounted side sills, modified lower rear apron, driver and front passenger airbags, air conditioning, leather sports steering wheel with blue inserts, carbon fibre centre console with start button, limited edition number plaque, Sparco aluminium handbrake, gear knob and pedals, boost gauge and ‘change up light’, bright metal tread plates with RS script, stereo radio/6CD model 6006E, Thatcham CAT 1 alarm. Dealer options; RS floor mats, TrakM8.
EXTERIOR
Build number 4050 is finished in electrifying Imperial Blue Metallic, (Code Q2), the only available colour. The finish is simply outstanding and despite the soft paint finish associated with this model very few imperfections will be found, and those that are, will reassure that this example is factory untouched in all respects. All the glass, plastics and light clusters are immaculate and originality seekers will be pleased to see supplying dealer number plates and factory stickers in the door apertures. The underside is fabulously clean and will appeal to a collector wanting natural perfection rather than refurbished sparkle, even coloured PDI dabs and stickers remain visible. This car will amaze in all respects.
INTERIOR
Inside this white-hot Ford are a pair of body-hugging Sparco road-race seats swathed in luxurious Racing Black and Blue Leather and Black Alcantara, (Code AR). The RS and Sparco logos are embossed and stitched into the upholstery, and this coupled with the aluminium fittings, push button start and numbered plaque, leave you with little doubt this is no ordinary Focus! The seats are perfect, even to the alcantara on the drivers side, and are reflective of a knowledgeable enthusiast owner. The steering wheel blue leather, a known weak point, is no more faded than even lower mileage examples. The RS carpet mats remain fitted and are in excellent condition. All controls function. Ford built this car to truly delight its motorsport loving RS devoted fan base and this is as good as they come.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Fitted with the thumping Ford 2.0 Duratec RS four-cylinder 16v unit the power output achieved is 212bhp at 5500rpm and 310Nm torque at 3500rpm. The maximum speed is 144mph while 0-60 is dispatched in just 6.4 seconds! The engine bay is beautifully clean with factory plates, stickers, labels and wing stamps visible. The Ford MTX-75 gearbox with a heavy duty AP Racing clutch offers the ultimate rally road car experience.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The unique 8 x 18in Oz Racing rims are pristine and are shod in the factory correct and especially developed Michelin Pilot Sport 225/40 ZR18 tyres. These tyres are no longer available and are highly prized to remain fitted. Very clean Brembo 4-pot calipers and 324mm ventilated discs provide immense stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
Registered new on the 30th June 2003 by Ford Main Dealers, Chris Allen Garages Ltd this example has been impeccably maintained by them from new! A total of 15 service entries with corresponding invoices detail every visit and along with the annual MOT history, warrant the very low 10,937 miles covered. The last visit was in March 2020 for a full service, cam-belt and water pump. The vehicle has only been registered to a retired Mr Anthony Lee who paid £19,995 as documented by the new vehicle invoice. Personally handed over by the garage owner, Max Harper-Allen who asked Mr Lee to give him first refusal if ever he sold the car due to its limited numbers and knowing Mr Lee was fanatical about his Fords! True to his word, Mr Lee sold the car back to the garage in 2016 where it has remained in Mr Allen’s care and in his private Ford collection. Working in the industry with trade insurance, Mr Allen has never registered the car in his name so it remains, one registered keeper on the registration document. A letter in the history file confirms this ownership.
All original handbooks, guides and special RS supplement are contained within the Ford leather RS wallet. Two keys with RS fobs are present. This car is not only amazing in its condition but in its history too making this what must be, one of the finest Mk1 Focus RS examples currently available.

Expert opinion

Ford Focus RS

5

The original Focus RS was the first truly performance-oriented Focus, and in fact the first RS Ford since the legendary Escort Cosworth. Big boots to fill, yet the 212hp Focus was not only less powerful but also front- not four-wheel drive. And yet, it was absolutely mega. The Quaife front differential did suffer from torque steer, but it also delivered unimaginably good traction out of corners, while the rest of the package was like a regular Focus on steroids – i.e. great to drive, and hilariously aggressive.

The Focus RS returned in Mk2 form in 2009, this time with a version of the Volvo-sourced 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine doing the hard work. As with the 2006 ST, it sounded fantastic, but instead of 225hp, it had 205hp, courtesy (in part) of a larger turbo, a new intercooler and a stronger crank. It was still front-drive, but added a clever front suspension system that Ford called RevoKnuckle as well as the limited-slip front differential to help cope with the extra power – even more necessary with the 350hp limited-run RS500.

The Mk3 RS arrived in 2016. It no longer had the five-cylinder engine, but the 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder made 350hp as standard. For the first time, the Focus also got four-wheel drive – and a clever torque vectoring system that could send up to 70 per cent of the car’s power to the back axle. It even had a Drift Mode for those interested in a bit of sideways fun.
