I've been lurking on here for some time, watching with increasing despair the descriptions of uneven, heavy handed traffic enforcement and poor and agressive driving behaviour around the country.

I've got to go to Chester for a conference next week - for the first time ever I am thinking about the train as a result of the comments posted on here regarding SCAMERAs hiding everywhere and so on. But I don't fancy their timekeeping and two changes worry me. And I enjoy driving (well I used to...)

I'm a careful, observant driver and generally obey speed limits in towns especially in residential areas (certainly speeds never near Streetcops or Essex fixed SCAMERAs limits) but drive reasonably quickly on motorways and Dual Carriageways. I can drive under the speed limit but don't want to be a rolling roadblock to people that know the roads and where the hiding places are.

I'm used to Essex with the A12, A127, M25 and bits of the M40 to Oxford but how much 'worse' is the M1, M6 (and toll) and the A51.

Will there really be Tallivans behind every obscure speed limit change, bush or telegraph pole?

to be honest, i reckon people are getting a bit too paronoid about the scameras, this may just be in my area, but i rarely see any vans or cameras especially on the nsl roads, ok, its getting worse and something needs to be done before it gets out of hand, but the days of enjoyable driving are not over yet

hmm my post went a bit off topic there

i havent seen any cameras on the m1 junction 1 to 11 if thats any help(i rarely go any further than that)

Keep to the speed limits...you'll fret less, keep your money in your pocket and get more MPG....

Bit of Radio 2 often helps the journey pass too...along with some boiled sweets..

One spot to watch out for is jc15 on the M1 near Northampton.

If there isn't a Talivan, that's rare!

Hard to get the adrenaline rush though. I use my Chavalier as a daily driver - cruising around, and then my Audi S2 Coupe for the odd weekend or evening blat...

In fact no rush is on. You just fall asleep at the wheel. And you know it SC.

Fall asleep? Shouldn't be driving, if you're that tired..

Take pride instead from your observation skills, accellerator sense, increased MPG, continued unblemished licence, less road rage etc etc..

You can always visit their websites for the talivan timetable to the week you intend to drive up there.....not always accurate - but at least you are aware of potential threat to your licence here. Und sometimes you read some very bizarre things on those sites .....

Und the b2/RA ---- jolly useful ...

But!...but!...but! Street! My handbook says " best fuel consumption is between 80mph and 130mph. Does this mean I'm exempt?

Aye, my volumex has a nice green zone on the rev gauge to indicate best fuel economy here in fifth, that means 80 - 85 mph

The problem with going at 70 on a motorway is that lanes one and two will have elephant racing (can we have an icon for that please) and lane three will have Roger Rep trying to get to the meeting that he should have left for an hour ago. I know he has Extra-Newtonian brakes and would regard my attempts at maintaining an adaquate stopping distance as a sign of weakness, but I don't really want to hold him up by doing 70. He is also likely to regard my need to get well in front of the HGV before pulling back in as a chance to undertake.

I can even set up the car not to go above 70 (I must post some practical experiences on the Ken/speed limiter thread).

I need to test to see if the autobox goes into top at 70 - I got really good MPG in France at 85 plus and I think it doesn't always swap up that early.
