Have you seen any decent road safety initiatives?

I'm just putting a feeler out for any decent road safety/casualty reduction ideas that have been carried out by Police?
Something pro-active, but aside from the usual "set up a checkpoint, nab as many as possible".
The only thing I can think of is getting school kids to tell motorists off for speeding outside a primary school.

Police were involved in this trying to educate the thick

Listening to a child repeating what he's been told to say but doesn't really understand isn't particularly helpful. Something pro-active, but aside from the usual "set up a checkpoint, nab as many as possible".

I've seen a couple of schools taking children out on quiet residential roads teaching them cycling safety. They've been doing it round where I live in the last few weeks.
When I was at school we had PC Chadwick teach us about road safety and the Green Cross Code, as well as Say No To Drugs and stranger danger and so on. I don't know if that's done now because often children seem to be encouraged to jump in front of cars waving cardboard 20mph signs.
I cant for the life of me remember what it was called but the proactive police bike riding safety scheme where a pro police rider takes a group of bikers out and critiques there riding habits.
Seemed like a good scheme, apparently police on the scheme where mostly accepting of motorcyclists only loosely following the law.

I've been on a few of these and I don't recall the police instructors "...accepting of motorcyclists only loosely following the law".
Start when they are young, 17 to 25s need the help and this initiative is outstandingly proactive.

No.
Lots of stupid speed humps, mini roundabouts, chicanes and other pointless measures put in by my local council who think money grows on trees.
They'd reduce casualties more IMO by cutting hedges around junctions etc - aiding visibility.......but this wouldn't prevent evil speeding drivers.No.

The highway code should be on the national curriculum. Making more people aware that the highway code doesnt just apply to drivers would help.
Our police invest heavily in speed cameras hidden around corners etc. I am sure this massively increases safety...............................
Apart from that, our council enjoy putting little cambers in the road before roundabouts, so that in heavy rain when you try to brake in a TVR you start to slide - another huge improvement to road safety, reduce contact between the tyre and road in a braking zone......

did making abs mandatory on new cars count as a road safety initiative ?
The development of ABS braking had nothing whatever to do with the police. It was however, arguably the greatest single advance in vehicle technology to prevent collision and drastically reduce braking distances. It has also doubtless saved many wayward pedestrians from instant death. This then can be claimed to be a true accident prevention method, unlike the utterly ludicrous claims by so called safety partnerships.
Until the police have a more visual presence and use it to prosecute bad drivers, not speeders, standards will continue to degrade; but you wonder how bad it's going to get before someone in authority does something creative.

The only scheme I think worked was the 'Green Cross Code' adverts in the 70's most who'd seen them would still remember the look listen part and still use it today.
There was one with "Charlie says" but I can't remember the points it was trying to make, only the Prodigy remix. The introduction of mandatory wearing of seatbelts, pretty much everyone prior to the introduction didn't wear one even though they were fitted to most cars.
I remember the day of introduction and feeling like a bit of a dick putting on the belt for the first time, but then noticed every other driver was doing the same.
Yes I know some still don't agree with it but I feel like somethings' missing if I start to drive off with it off even if just reversing up a driveway. Weird.
