Oh Nintendo........
Discussion
Ok so had a day off uni, so thought I would look up some details for the up coming Nintendo Wii and prices for getting one of launch day.
However what I found shocked me both on forums and prices at places like GAME.com…..
The concept promised a cheap console (fun for the whole family) which although didn’t have the true next-gen graphics was going to be substantially cheaper than Microsoft and Sony. Games were going to be 35 – 40 pounds and everything was designed to be funky and cool with many different coloured machines
I thought ok that’s brilliant, controls looks like a blast and Red Steel looks so involving with the Numbchuck controller can be used to throw grenades etc
I went to buy one and saw that you have to buy an extra game with the console, so that takes the price to £220 (in affect your getting two games, wii sports and a game of your choice). Then you have to add that Numbchuck controller if you want to play the game of your choice in my case Red Steel as it has the analogue stick on it apposed to the basic one provied. That brings the price to £240…..
Ok you might be saying, but then I found out many of these brilliant games are priced at £45, now its only £5 and you can shop around but what happened to “affordable games” (cheaper than Xbox 360)????
Final nail in the coffin is that games like Red Steel won’t support online gaming (why??) and to enjoy it fully you’ll need to buy a set of 4 full sets of controls £40 each….. And that’s under the assumption that I have four friends….. and then mates who want to play, and willing to come round at whatever time of the day I wish to play….. ain’t going to happen
So potentially you will get for your £360
Console
4 controllers so you can play multiplayer games with that brilliant motion sensors
2 games
And…….
Nintendo coolness…..
Am I missing something or is buying a Xbox 360 cheaper and better buy

What your missing is that the 360 is a year old (pretty much) and as such places like Game and the like can't really hoik the price up on them or pull a "limited numbers" excuse.
Now, the Nintendo Wii... they can. Give it 8 months and the Wii will be far cheaper especially when 3rd party controllers, memory cards and such come out to play. Hell in 8 months the second hand market will be in full swing with people who don't like the 3D controllers and flogging them on fleabay.
It's just the companies price gouging in effect. My copy of NWN2 had two price stickers on it (one under the other). It had this weeks price of £32.99 and in effect next weeks price of £24.99... gits.

See your point but its expensive no matter which console you have if you want 4 pads etc! Wii has wireless built in which is a bonus.
Games will come down, the RRP for xbox titles is still £50 but Amazon/Play etc flog them for nearer £30-£40. Give it a few months and they should be down to £25....hopefully
I've ordered Zelda, £32 aint bad IMO for a launch title.
I worked it out to be £230 for the console, two controllers + nunchuck and Zelda, Wii Sports and Wii Play.

Well Rob, 230 isn’t a bad price....
I think I slightly exaggerated the initial costs a bit (most people wouldn’t buy four pads from the off).
Can I ask you where you have ordered yours? I have no gripe spending 230 ish it was just a shock when people on the wii forums started talking about it not having this that and the other and got me wondering....
Steve if that’s true, ah, that would be brilliant. I thought I would have to shell out another 20 quid to get a full set of controllers.
Another question then, what classic games are you going to download... Apparently they’re going to cost 4 – 6 pounds. My money will be going on Golden Eye (possibly the best game ever conceived other than doom and possibly half life... Well best game on N64 then... ) and I may have to download Star Fox due to my early memories of it, with all my mates round when we were young…..
(Ah happy days... Mum made you pizzas and snacks.. You got to stay up till midnight which we thought was the twilight, forbidden hours and you could try and get the person who fell asleep first with whip cream and smarties in their face......)
Cheers guys

The UK launch price is £170 and that gets you the following
1* Wii
1* Wiimote
1* Nunchuck
1* Wii sports game (5 mini sports games boxing, golf, tennis, bowling and one other I cant remember)
Cables to connect it all to TV and detect controllers position.
For £170 I think that’s a bargen + the fact that it has wifi built in
If you want a look at the other cool features go to
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Am8BQvA746g
bit long but shows a lot of cool features.
PS I have one on pre order and I am looking forward to it

I heard that it was going to be all the NES and SNES games made available.
I also belive they're in negotiations with Sega for access to selected Master System and Megadrive titles (i.e. Sonic) which if they can pull it off would be a corker... not investigated but I hear its also going to be compatible with Gamecube? Just damn.
Looks like the Wii will use bog standard SD cards to store games on as well and Nintendo are, in Japan at least, pushing out little kiosk type things where you can put you SD card in and for however much it costs have a new game (or games) slapped on it.
Personally if they can get the pricing right for the downloads I think the Wii is going to be excellent, which is why Sadako pre-ordered one this weekend
Hi all,
If you have a bit of a poke about on the web the wii virtual console will run the following system games
NES
SNES
N64
Game cube (will take game cube disks)
Mega drive
Genisis
Virtual pc
and possibly others as well also the wii has controller ports for 4 game cube controllers so you can use them with the older games rather than the wimote however as has been pointed out if you turn the wimote on its side it has the same button lay out as NES any way. And all this is stored on either an SD card or the internal memory.

Must be tough being a student these days.
Very tough
So when should i go and order my Wii, i've got an hour of Business Ethics tommorrow and meetings with a few mates to start building a base for a debate i've got to give later next week..... core that only leaves 5 hours worth of shopping time left in the day to go and buy it!!!
Not sure where you're expecting to be able to buy it from tomorrow, unless its on import at a massively inflated price or you live in the States. It isn't released until 8th December.
Re the having to buy a separate game and pushing the price up to £2xx. This will probably be the case in places like Game etc, which force you to buy one of their wonderful packages. It enables them to offload the less popular games more easily. Shop around though and you will get it without a forced new game.
For info, titles available on virtual console at release should be the following:
SNES
Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero, SimCity
N64
Super Mario 64
SEGA MEGA DRIVE
Sonic the Hedgehog
Altered Beast
Golden Axe
Columns
Gunstar Heroes
Ecco the Dolphin
Space Harrier II
Toe Jam & Earl
Ristar
Dr. Robotonik’s Mean Bean Machine
PC ENGINE
Bonk’s Adventure
Super Star Soldier
Victory Run
Bomberman’93
Dungeon Explorer
Plus some NES games I'm not interested in.

Its not all old console games IIRC, just the ones they choose to make available. It should be a large chunk of the favourites though, there is a list of the ones available from launch somewhere on the interweb
I've ordered the console with Wii Sports, 1 controller and nunchuck. £30 for Zelda and £30 for Wii Play (another controller) comes to £230 with Amazon.
Didnt realise I would need a second nunchuck so make that £245

Umm not to sure how to take that... Vesuvius 996 pointed out light heartily that it must be hard for students nowadays.
To which I was being a bit sarcastic, saying that yes it is very hard. I illustrated how hard it is by showing Anthony what I had on tomorrow to show how hard life can be for a final year student at this time of year (which turns out not very). So you see I wasn’t really saying I’m going out tomorrow in your face!! I was merely trying to make a joke.
Oh btw I like many others could buy a Wii tomorrow, it is true that I couldn’t take it home but I could pay for the goods tomorrow and then wait till when ever its launched....
Some people hey??

I was just hoping to save you the effort of traipsing round the shops looking for one when, as a student, I imagine that there are better uses for your time, such as sleeping, drinking, etc.
I remember how hard it was being a final year student, four hours of lectures a fortnight etc.
But if we're being pedantic, you couldn't buy a Wii tomorrow, merely put down a deposit which wouldn't guarantee you getting one anyway
Where did you see the prices you were mentioning quoted out of interest?
