Happened twice to me last night. Admittedly there was a lot of grit about, which is my excuse anyhow.

Try to keep my hand in in safe circumstances to ensure if it isn't planned I have no problems. Oh and after a good curry and a few pints!

The S's rear is quite well behaved under normal circumstances, but a couple of weeks ago at Donington in the wet I had two moments, one at the old hairpin (a powerslide?/360 spin) and another on the Craner Curves (powerslide?/grass tracking).

It all made me apreciate the abilities of 'proper drivers' like the EVO road/track testers.

I have much to learn.

Most evenings much to the wife’s disgust and the car – most times I’m out in her

Very rarely in my Chim, until a couple of weeks ago when I decided to replace the rear S02s. They were getting close to the wear indicators. Instantly that decision was made the rear end was all over the place. Couldn't decide if they had just realised they were getting bald, I had started putting my foot down to try and lose it, knowing they were due to be replaced or the roads were suddenly covered in deisel. Certain to say, after a new pair of S02s on the rear I am driving carefully to a) save the wear & b)run them in. (Does anybody still run in new tyres?)

Yes, you need to (a) wear off the release coating, which takes a couple of miles, (b) scrub in the tyre surface, which takes a hundred miles or so, and (c) bring the tyres up to temperature to complete the curing process (which can be very hard this time of year).

The S is very well behaved on the whole and whilst I can get it to drift (ok, squeal sideways) on track, I find once the rear breaks away at all I can't recover it.

Had a few rear end shimmys yesterday-around an icy Oulton Park - one at about 70 mph in a straight line

Hmm, not so much "lost" the back end (it's always behind me ) but got reminded twice this morning of just how much torque a Griff 500 has low down. Span the rears on two occasions, both times in 3rd.

Still, that's what the old Rover lump is about

It's often assumed that journo's are demon drivers. With the exception of the few that have raced, many of them are just enthusiasts like you and me who happen to write about it for a living.
