Panthers player died last night from a ‘neck cut’.
Absolutely horrific and devastating to those around him.

I remember the days when I used to skate regularly and getting ‘slashed’ by skates was always mentioned, but so incredibly rare I think I’ve only seen it once, and that was a slight nick to fingers.

One of mine plays hockey and had his fingers broken over the weekend, because he is the sort to be in the thick of whatever is going on. I am pleased he doesn't play on ice.
I’ve seen many a bad injury playing hockey and skating, but nothing as horrific as this.
It’s obviously devastating for his family, friends and teammates, however it will have a lasting impact on everyone at the game and the other player involved.
Having been the non-injured player involved in a freak incident that resulted in a serious injury, it’s something that stays with you, even when the other player makes a full recovery.
I’m surprised that better neck guards are not mandatory equipment these days. I suspect they will be going forward from this.

I’m on the ice or at a rink multiple times a week. When at public sessions it never ceases to amaze me how many people don’t appreciate how dangerous skating can be.
Looks entirely natural to me as a ice hockey player. Please don’t start suggesting anything like this, and i feel the need to politely ask you both to delete these posts.
Ice Hockey is not played with malice, it is played with a strong ethical code, yes we may punch each other, but that stops when defeat is accepted or injury is deemed.
It is a sport where the players act in a manner where fans are still comfortable sitting with each other.
It is a sport that i love, that i have only ever received respect from my fellow players be it on my team or the opposite side.
The UK and i suspect Worldwide Hockey community is currently in grieving as this does not happen in our sport.
Obviously it is up to you whether you decide to or not, but i sincerely hope that you do.

I’ve seen the video unfortunately. As others have said, hard to believe these are the last few minutes of that poor chaps life.

What happened at the weekend is awful and pretty much a worse case scenario when it comes to risks in the sport. Whilst rare, there have been 2 other instances of this happening (that I can think of), in both previous cases the players survived.
Neck guards for junior players are already part of the mandatory gear, I distinctly remember I hated wearing one (there are different types ranging from a more robust design with plastic insert, through to a flexible piece of Kevlar infused material).
I can be absolutely sure there was no malice or ill intent with what happened, it was an incredibly unfortunate accident that serves as a brutal reminder of the risks we (as humans) expose ourselves to during our daily lives.
In my own experience, when playing as a junior, my brother took a heavy impact against the board and swallowed his tongue, luckily there was a doctor in the crowd to administer immediate first aid and clear his airway. My dad was also one of the first people in the UK to wear a full face visor after taking a puck between the eyes and being effectively blind for 6 weeks.
Whilst it doesn't bring any solace to the poor players family, friends and loved ones, Ice Hockey is an inherently dangerous sport whereby fatal and serious injuries are thankfully relatively rare. Discussing it in context to the millions of minutes of Ice Hockey played each year without such incidences we can rationalize the risk somewhat.

Seen the clip and it looks deliberate. You can see the player looking at him coming in and aims for him.
Matt Pelgrave, the opposition player has a big reputation for bad behaviour.
