Yeah saw the old porker on track. Always a bit special seeing stuff like that out on track. I was the lone silver grey csl ventured out for afternoon. Great day as always at Oulton. Has anyone got any pics? Who was photographer of the day? Thanks.

Re the Elise , the marshals said it had been clipped by a much faster car overtaking on the top of the hill on the approach to Druids....which unsettled it....tyre walls did the rest frown

Thanks for the reply.

That's what I heard had happened.......plus the same guy also hit somebody else in the afternoon. Do you happen to know if that was indeed the case???

Cheers

Exactly what I heard! Wonder why MSV didn't jump on him, as he was obviously a danger to everyone else?

The problem lies with those carrying out the morning briefing, and not being specific in explaining that "water tower" is a bend, corner or what ever you would wish to term it!!! The steering is certainly not straight when approaching when entering that section of the circuit, and as a consequence, overtaking should be as it is everwhere else, on the left, on the straights, not in the braking areas, and most importantly, BY CONSENT!!! If I had a pound for every time I've had words with someone, who has barged their way through, when I've been instructing someone, then I would be an extremely well paid instructor!!!!

When you approach the driver later and ask "since when didn't water tower constitute a corner", the answer is always the same, ....."I thought you were moving over to the right to let us past"!! No, dhead, we were taking the conventional racing line!!!

Some may remember a couple of years ago, when a friend of mine was coaching a SaxMax junior driver, & barely half an hour had passed at the start of the day, when a prick from Scotland, Bruce, in a Time Attack Evo, thought he would take to the narrow strip of grass at the apex on the left, between the kerb & the Armco, to overtake the SaxMax which would have been travelling at approximately 90mph when he committed himself to the corner. The fact that the strip of grass is no more than half the width of the Evo didn't seem to be a consideration to the wker, which then caused absolute mayhem, totally destroying both cars, and about 20 metres of Armco. The SaxMax had cost the junior driver's Father a considerable amount of money to build from a new shell, and then had to stand the
cost and time involved just to build another car. The day had to be stopped until early afternoon, and so everyone lost out that day!!!

That section of track, is in my opinion, the most dangerous of all, and the only solution would be, to make it perfectly clear in the briefing, thay anyone reported for overtaking there would be sent home, without discussion.

I will say that the jerk from Scotland was banned from all MSV circuits permanently, but of course, that is of no compensation to the SaxMax people or all those that lost half a days tracktime.

Thanks for info/experience. Will bear it in mind but am cautious there, or anywhere!, anyway. Do you think it's worth raising the question in breifing then it's explained for everyone to hear.

btw, Do you know photographer?

Well, with the frequency that it appears to be an issue, yes I think it may be worth mentioning in the briefing. Yes, I do know the photographer, but can't recall what he trades under, but will try to find out later.

I'm sure Matt Sayle will remember.

Many thanks for the benefit of your professional input, Howard. As it happens, I'm at Oulton tomorrow, & I will ask the "briefer" to stress the potential dangers of that section of the circuit.

PS Hope you're keeping fit & well. smile

I agree with you that it is one of the more dangerous overtaking points Howard but I wouldn't go for a blanket ban on overtaking in that section or at least not on the run towards it which is what you would have to do to make a ban work. A warning in the briefing of the risks there would probably be worthwhile but it's never going to stop the kind of clown that clips a car in the morning and then carries on driving like a c0ck in the afternoon.

Black flag and ban is the only solution for some people, you just have to hope it gets spotted and sorted before any actual incidents occur.

Steve

I think the real problem is "overtaking without consent" - if that rule is obeyed, there shouldn't be a problem anywhere on track. "With consent" doesn't mean it's compulsory either!

Totally agree about the obeying consent rule yes.

I would say that though that consent is also a request and once it is given it's better to make the overtake, if safe to do so, rather than going into the next corner with the (possibly much less experienced) driver in front off line as he waits for you to pass.

Bottom line is a bit of consideration and common sense all round should stop any incidents happening.
