Ok people, as above,

I'm based in Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent to be precise and I'm looking for a job, I'm currently working in a temporary position after being made redundant back in July, however, its just not me and figure this is as good a time as any to look for something else, obviously i know the jobs market is not good at the moment, but I'm desperately hoping someone on the forum might be in a position to help me.

I've been an insurance surveyor for the last 7.5 years, but would love to get into the motor industry in some capacity, I know it is notoriously difficult to get into with no experience of the industry or past employment in that industry, but have a massive interest and love to learn quickly, so this would be my ideal choice, money isnt a massive motivating factor for me, I would much rather be doing a job I enjoy than be loaded.

Anyway, enough of me babbling on, i thought it might be good to try and get over to people in a different way than the usual cv, email, jobcentre route, so hopefully someone on here may be able to help me out??

Thanks in advance

Steve

If the salary level is not an issue then that should help differentiate you from the rest of the applicants. I would therefore simply write a strong covering letter, mentioning gaining experience is a higher priority than salary (although you'll probably have to prepare for the chancer who offers you an unpaid role!) with your CV and send to every dealer within your chosen commuting distance. I'd be shocked if you didn't get some response back. Good luck!

Good luck fella; I'm about to be made redundant myself! I changed career 11 years ago at the age of forty...it can be done if you have the drive and determination to MAKE it happen smile

The job market in Stoke On Trent is terrible. All telesales and pretend marketing rubbish.

Good luck though.

Are you prepared to move away from the Stoke area? With the job market as it is, being location-independent will be an advantage.

It's not that bad (ok, it's not brilliant), there's a lot of distribution/logistics operations that are alright. Half decent jobs where you can work your way up the ladder if you're reasonably good.

Plus there's a little bunch of us working away in Telly/Broadcast/Film stuff, although we're not recruiting just yet.

I must admit the jobs market in stoke is quite limited, like already said, call centers and carers, there are quite a lot of computer industry jobs but have no clue about techy stuff so a complete waste of time even trying to be honest.

I have no desire to move away permanantly, as have a mortgage, family etc, but willing to travel to the right job within reason, derby, nottingham, burton, stafford, lichfield etc etc are all within the distance i would be willing to commute.

The film tv thing sounds interesting, what is it you do exactly?? I have a freind who makes adverts, apps, sound and vision editing etc etc, sounds like fun.

To quantify it exactly is a little tricky, as we have more than one hat to wear.

Primarily, we provide engineers into the Broadcast Industry (and proper Film i.e. Movies/commercials, to a more limited extent). Specialising in RF systems (wireless cameras or point to point wireless Video links), remote camera platforms (aka hotheads), and Vision Engineering (which is the controlling the camera's Iris and Colour).

On top of that, we're developing and manufacturing electronic devices, geared mainly to Broadcast, but also suitable for CCTV/Security/Commercial purposes.

We also collaborate with a local video production company who shares our premises, and produce corporate videos (ie, training/promotional/conference stuff).

Keeps us busy, pays reasonably well (a pittance by proper PH standards), but truthfully, I'm getting sick of the unsociable hours and extended travelling. I've been doing it a bit too long, the newer guys seem to love it, which is good.

I had a read of your first post, and would have to admit that I'm not sure exactly what it is you are looking for, and what you think the source of it might be. Even your thread title is vague.

As has already been said, there is little satisfactory employment in your area and what there is does not seem to be available to you .
If you are hoping that someone in your area might have a job to offer, perhaps you need to be a lot clearer about what you are able to do and what kind of money you are looking for.

Have you considered self employment? Is there anything at all in your area that you might be able to do, which people appear to be willing and able to pay for?

The thread title couldnt be clearer in my eyes, i want a job, pure and simple, to be honest, im willing to do pretty much anything, im in a job at the moment which im not particularly happy doing and want a change. I would love nothing more than to be involved in some way shape or form in the motor industry, but with no experience other than a genuine interest in anythng with 4wheels, im finding it very difficult to secure anything, nobody seems to want to know because of the fact i have no experience. The fact that im obviously not completely useless, being a building surveyor for the last 7.5 years doesnt seem to count for much by the looks of it. Salary wise, again im not to worried, im willing to start at the bottom and work my way up to get to where i want to be, its just a case of convincing someone to give me a chance at somethng, i think i would be good at car sales, but again without experience nobody will even look at me, car valeting would interest me also, i have a good memory for numbers, faces etc so a position in parts department or service department would be good.

I guess im hoping for someone that is like minded with regards to the interest in cars, to give me a chance to proove myself, if im not good at whatever it is they choose to give me the chance at, then so be it, i will accept defeat, but i would appreciate at least the opportunity to try!!!

Could part of the problem lie therein? What you want is clear to you, but you are not making it clear to others. Take the thread title, for instance. You've omitted the area that you are looking in and the type of job you are looking for. How about "LFW motor or motorsport related, West Midlands"?

Also you haven't given much detail of what you have done to find suitable work, which makes it difficult for people to make suggestions. You didn't really address the issue of self employment which I enquired about either. I gather it doesn't interest you, but why not? Sometimes if no-one will give you a job (which was the situation I was in a couple of years ago) you have to make your own.
