Ahh right, okay, here's the issue:

(Copied from e36coupe.com)

Hey guys, really need some help/advice with this!! As one or two of you may know from the Journal section, I've recently bought Jappa's silver m3 coupe. Since owning the car, I've done a minor amount of work to it but have encountered an ongoing problem which is really giving us some grief!! It goes some thing like this: had a track day booked at Pembrey last Sunday, checked the car all over the day before, fresh oil and filters, plugs, tyre pressures, full tank of super etc. etc. Whilst driving the car home on the Saturday afternoon, after about ten minutes of driving, it started to run very fluffy and hesitant, giving the feeling it was either over fueling or running too lean!! I limped the car home but it did seem to clear ever so slightly by the time I arrived so did not worry about it too much. On the Sunday morning, on the way to Pembrey, it started doing exactly the same thing again only this time, it came to a halt totally! We checked the basics but to no avail so towed the car back home. Sent the car to my local garage first thing Monday morning and, after much deliberation, they diagnosed fuel filter. A new filter was subsequently ordered and fitted but, no difference, still very poor starting and the car would not rev!! They then pulled the fuel pump out, it had a 12v supply on it and it seemed to be working fine. Everything else on the car was as it should be, then, for apparently no reason at all, it started running perfectly!! I took it for a 20mile or so run and the car was flawless!! Back at the garage, my fitter sugested to 'only' thing he had done was to disturb the fuel pump so it was replacad with a new unit along with a new fule sender also!! I then drove the car for the next day or so, not any great distance just a couple of local trips, around 6-8 miles or so and had no issues whatsoever!
Friday evening, trackday booked for Llandow on Saturday, really excited first time out in the new car and........ you've guessed it, started doing exactly the same thing again!! Towed the car back to a friends house and spent the next couple of hours double checking everything, the car would start, idle very unsettled then bog down whenever it was revved! It did put out a little black smoke from the exhausts but nothing too excessive!! Plugs were dry, there was fuel getting to the injector rail and no damp or moisture anywhere!! We pulled the multiplug off the throttle position sensor and cleaned all the contacts etc. still nothing!! Gutted!! The next day, I borrowed a set of coil packs from a pal's Evo, slightly different I know, but these made no difference whatsoever!! Left the car for a day or so, jumped in it this morning, started perfectly, did everything it was supposed to, then, after 10-15 mins, same thing again!!
I've got the car going into a BMW specialist in Cardiff on Wednesday this week but, was wondering if anyone here would be able to point me in the right direction!! When I bought the car off Jasper, I drove it almost 250 miles home and it was great, this has just started happening and it's really pi$$ing me off!!

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Paul

P.S. The car is running a Geoff Steel carbon airbox, Schrick cams, Alpha N etc

Did the camshaft sensor get checked ?

I had one which was intermitantely 'telling' the car I was doing a different speed and hence messed up the fuel/oxygen mix.

It's actually being done now as we speak! Because the car has no MAF (due to the Alpha N setup) it soes throw up a whole load of faults!

Again, the diagnostic is being done today! It seems very strange as if the car is left for a couple of days, it seems to be just fine! I'm guessing that if a sensor was at fault, wouldn't the problem be constant?? confused

My old 328 sport ran a bit odd before the cam sensor failed. Under load it's stutter like it wasn't getting fuel then eventually died altogether.

No fault codes present! I'm going to pop in the dealers' first thing in the morning...... It may well be a case of trying various sensors etc. at random until it comes good!!

Hi Paul, hope you enjoyed Pembrey, at least the afternoon was dry smile

Not sure what spec / mods your motor is / has but assuming you are running an AFM then this needs to be excluded from the list of suspects if you have a fuelling problem. Has it been checked / substituted?

wavey Hi Alan,

Yes mate, had a superb day at Pembrey, hope you did too!! In all honesty, I had an unfair advantage in the damp morning sessions (due to the Evo's 4wd) so it may well have been a good choice of car!!

With regardss to my M3 dilema, thanks for the advice but we think we may have found something!! It seems there are signs of water ingress inside the cars ECU!! Not too sure at this stage as to how it got there but.... possibly a blocked drain hole or similar??

The car's having it's cage fitted during the first week of June and it's an 'all glass out jobbie' so that should be a good time to investigate the matter further!!
