I am going to buy my first watch for 20 years. Not being a watch buying sort of person I don't know the best/cheapest place to go, any ideas? I had a look at a few sites and the best I can come up with is just under £800

This is what I am after, its a Tag Carrera model WV211B.FC6202

There's a rather snooty attitude towards TAG Heuer amongst watch enthusiasts. The general perception is TAG Heuer = chav wannabe F1 driver, Heuer = classy gentleman racer.

I'm not a snob either way really but appreciate both brand for their own reasone.

Heuer was originally set up in 1860 by Edouard Heuer who ran the company and in the 30's he produced the first of the iconic watches, the Autavia. In the 40's 50's and 60's he was responsible for creating many more of the brands iconic watches like the Carreras, Monacos, Camaro, Silverstone, Monza and the more elegant ranges like the Dato 12's etc etc.

In the 80's, Heuer was bought out by TAG or "Techniques d'Avant Garde" who had nothing to do with watch making and bought Heuer purely as a financial investment. This is what gave the new company Tagheuer, a bad reputation amongst watch lovers.

Initially Tag killed off all of the lovely ranges and started with their own new direction, but soon after in the 90's they started to realise that they had alienated their original customer base so they started to launch re-editions of their iconic watches under the Heuer logo only.

The Carrera I have is actually a 1964 Re-edition bought new in 2002, so it is really a Tag (hence me not being a snob!) wink But I must say that the original watch from the 60's are a bit more special than todays watches.

HTH.

eta. It was Edouards sons who continued the company on in the 50's and 60's. Ed wasnt still running it at 120 years old hehe

I bought one with a s/s strap in Antigua in 2004 for £600 quid.

Might be worth combining a holiday to the right location.

Heuerboy, a great bloke (I bought an Autavia from him earlier this year) why buy a 'fake' when you can buy the original, I can't believe people would buy one of the new McQueen style Monaco for 6k+ when you could buy an original for less

Because its not the real/orginal item, it may say Heuer on it but its not the original, example, to my mind a Cobra made in the 1980's by AC Cars is probably a very good car but its not the original 1960's classic, it may well be better built have decent brakes etc , but it dose not have the .5% that makes it the real macoy, IMHO that is

If you're prepared for a slight change of spec, Neil over at Chronomaster has the GMT for £595.

£800 is a very low price. Is it from a UK site? If it's from the US don't forget to add delivery, VAT and duty.....

www.swisswatchesdirect.co.uk have the Carrera you're after for £980/1000 depending on payment method. I've never used them, but the website seems fairly respectable ...

Best place I've found is the Tag shop at Bicester Village. Depends where you are located as to if it's worth a visit or not. Don't know if they do mail order or not.
