I know inevitably this thread will get moved but id rather ask the people I know on here than a general mass forum so if it could be left for a short while till I get a good answer please!?

Basically ive won a competition at work and got some vouchers that I can spend basically with Ernest Jones. Now I know sod all about watches never been into them but this is an ideal opportunity to get a reasonably decent one.

I dont want to waste the vouchers on anything but also understand im looking at fairly middle of the road watches, however if something was in the price range thats not going to lose a fortune and be a reasonable investment I would rather do that than just get the one that looks nice!!

The budget dependning on how much I want to put towards it myself will be circa £1800 - 2500, I know the big brands such as Tag and the Omega's, but they also do Rado, Ball Engineering, Longines, Baume & Mercier, Maurice Lacroix.

Any suggestions or advice would be rather welcome!

Get something quality that is also recognised and it will hold some value. For that money you can get a decent Tag or Omega which is where i'd look.

I'm addicted to watches. They are very personal, so you can get ideas, but the final decision must be yours. Take your time (no pun intended) with choosing. I have watches that I seldom wear - due to me not feeling comfortable with them on.

My personal preference is for automatic movements (as both of the above are). Quartz are more accurate, but to me they are soul-less. The whole idea of marking time by mechanical means has me fascinated. The best timekeepers are Chronometers (not to be confused with chronographs). If you go for an auto, then choose one with the best movement you can afford.

You also need to know what functions you want. Time, date, day, month, chronograph? The more a watch does, the more difficult it is to tell the time - the basic reason why you have the watch!
Some countries are better at making easily read watches than others (The English are some of the best).

I could rattle on for ages, but don't think that's what you want. I will therefore cut short, and just say that for your price range, I would look at the Chopard Mille Miglia range if you have large wrists, or if not, a Baume & Mercier Classima if you can get them at the dealers.

eta: Ball are pretty new on the watch scene (though the company name is old), and they have a unique lighting system. Look up some of the sites that sell them, that also show pictures of the watches in the dark. Not what I would choose, as the fad will wear off.

Tag or Omega for me. But buying a high end watch is all personal choice.

I always wanted a Breitling myself. Not as an investment just because I have always really liked the styling. Saw a really nice one last year and bought it.

If you want one to hold it's value tho get a classic style one not too in your face.

Cheers for the detailed reply!

They do have the classima so will have a look at it.

Things would like, definately time and date, not fussed on month, chronograph do like on some watches but not on others. Going to have a look on Sunday see what I think of them but I do have small wrists so getting something im comfortable with is not easy.

In that case, don't get anything that's more than 10mm thick. My favourite is an Ebel, which is 8mm thick, and has a slightly domed crystal.

Think the Breitlings are wider than my arm!!

Know what you mean about personal choice, will take some time over looking at them and see what suits me.

WHS, have got a Titanium Breitling myself and has been the best watch I have brought, have also got an Omega Seamaster, but the Breitling always wins IMO, plus you can get into the Breitling tent at Biggin Hill for free when you wear it there smile

A nice Tag from me!
Personal recommendation really as I have owned mine since 1998 with just two bty replacements to speak of.
Keeps perfect time and still looks respectable.
