Can anyone recommend somewhere to store a 38ft yacht for say 2-3 years that isn't going to be almost the same price as annual marina fee (we are paying 4k a year in Port Solent on a sublet). Due to young children I am considering either putting it into storage, it wouldn't need to be indoor or selling it. Preferably it would be a yard with a hoist and some spare room i.e. deacons.

I have already contacted the PH Broker (Cheers Alex).

Cheers thats £2.2k per annum, I imagined that you could get it cheaper than that.

We use Moody's at the top of the Hamble for overwintering, they are not as pricey as you may think. Mercury also dry store a few boats at the back end of the car park, I have no idea of cost though.

The small yards at the top end of Portsmouth harbour are quite cheap for annuals, so would guess hardstanding storage has a similar theme? Most dry out, hence cheaper, but this will be no worry for you if it's on the hard only.

The idea is to park up or sell, I know people go sailing with babies but at the moment I cannot see it happening.

Maybe it needs a little more planning, prehaps I should get a copy of "kids in the cockpit" and see what they suggest.

It looks like £2.2-2.5k is the going rate for annual storage.

hehe, ours is 7mths old and yesterday we bought a JOD35 for a bit of action around the cans, a bit of family cruising and a bit of 2 handed racing. What makes you say that you cannot see yourself sailing with kids? I know it is difficult, but surely the earlier they start enjoying the sea, the better?

I have sailed all my life. My Dad was happy taking myself and my brother sailing pretty much from the first year of our lives.

Alex,

If you're not going to sell, then I would look at some of the yards that have sprung up up-river from Shamrock Quay. When you drive over the Northam Bridge towards Southampton, you see a yard next to the rowing club... I doubt they charge a huge amount for storage.

One last suggestion from me, slightly outside the box, but would you be prepared to keep her abroad? My storage in France was a fraction of what it would cost in the uk (about 1/3 or 1/4 of uk prices), and it's not that far to go really. Might be worth investigating?

Good idea MS, I think that cherbourg was about £1800 per year.

The place up the itchen have confirmed it as £2.2k a year.

Village how much do you think a mildly competative 40.7 would be? I reckon the running costs could be quite high!

Thanks for all the help.

We used to keep our catamaran up at Wicormarine on Fareham Creek. Very friendly and well equiped boatyard.

Have sailed with both my girls - now 3 and 5 - since they were born.

Our cruising range has shortened considerably, we're much more cautious when making weather related calls and we motor sail a lot when we really should be sailing - but it's been completely practical. Having children has certainly changed the way we use our boat, but we don't enjoy it any less as a consequence.

Since it appears that the cost of laying your boat up is hardly any cheaper than keeping it in commission - I'd certainly recomend giving it a go.

I've been sailing since I was two months old and my brother was younger. Have photos of my parents winning the sonata family championship on the Clyde, nappies drying and flying on the rigging and my feeding timed for between the races. I think there were a few protests from other crews!!

I suspect that this might be the cheapest place in Portsmouth harbour.

You could also look at the IoW. Bembridge or Island Harbour could offer value for money.

If you are thinking about France, then Cherbourg is easy, but you should also consider places like St Vaast, Carentan or Diellette.

If it's for 3 years wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to sell it then buy again when the time suits.

Even dry stored she will need work doing or at least being checked over every now and then.

Or if you really want to keep her have her hoisted out and have he delivered in land where storage is less of a premium.
