I must be getting old. I am starting to get really annoyed with the quality of tinned coconut milk these days. The full fat stuff may as well be light as it’s more often than not really watery. I have tried all the main brands and they are all crap. Anyone got a recommendation for a decent one? Starting to think I should go back to the solid block stuff.

I’ve tried -

Blue dragon
Dunn river
Biona
Island sun
Tropical Sun
KTC
Grace
Kingfisher
Sainsburys
Tesco
M&S

Yeah for recipes where it would work like in a curry but you can’t cook say rice n peas or bake with coconut cream because the fat content is too high and it doesn’t work properly.

I’m experiencing full fat coconut milk that, if it wasn’t labelled, I would assume was light coconut milk. So I’m kinda stuck with some dishes where milk is too thin and watery and cream too fatty. Hmm

Never had issues really, but did buy some dried stuff you mix up and works well.

I used to use the solid block creamed coconut for years but couldn’t get it when I moved abroad so switched back to tins. I think I’ll go back to the solid

Have you tried mixing the cream and milk together?

Aldi's own seems pretty good to me. Needs mixing but lovely and creamy.

ALDI is good, however LIDL's own brand 'freshona' is 91%.

here's a tweet to give you an idea

The brand you want is AROY-D. It's used by professional chefs, especially in Thai cooking who use a lot of it. You can get it in some supermarkets or you may have to go to an oriental supermarket.

Here's a link to a video by Pailin Chongchitnant. She's a Cordon Bleu chef and really knows her Thai cookery. I also have two of her books and thoroughly recommend her channel.

I use Aroy, but I also have the Maggi powdered stuff as backup. The latter is decent enough, but .... do not use it as a milk substitute for someone who is lactose intolerant as it contains milk powder !!

Aldi full-fat stuff. Something like 94% coconut.

Or go to your local Asian Supermarket and buy a kilo box of coconut milk powder and make your own, at whatever consistency you like.

Waitrose 'Essential' is pretty good.

I know what you mean about the rest though. There seems to have been a vast drop-off in quality since I first started using coconut milk, which would have been the early 90s.

I think everyone has ignored our posts. both LIDL and ALDI have the best ones on the market with the highest %, higher than more expensive brands.

However i think this has dropped slightly to 80%. the can i bought recently from LIDL wasn't a thick mayo-like consistency, but a little more fluid. Having said that it's still nowhere near as bad as the branded stuff.

Aldi’s is 62% according to their website so one of the worst? Sainsburys own is 68% so an improvement.
