I want to set up the living room with a cinema system (I assume a 5.1 system) and separately have speakers in kitchen, bedroom etc for audio only.

To maximise space in the living room I'm thinking ceiling speakers and was wondering if there are wireless systems for ceiling speakers or do I need to get these wired back to the sound source? Also IF you can get wireless is that a good idea for a 5.1 system?

Rest of the house could be traditional type speakers so thinking a Sonos type system might fit the bill there.

Thanks

No such thing as wireless power. If you are going to have to run one cable...

You'd still need some wires if only for the power to the speakers. I know you can buy ordinary rear speakers in wireless form, but not sure about celing ones. Personally I found it easier to run thin cables round the edge of the floor (in my case under the edge of a wood floor). Then I managed to thread the cable behind the dot and dab plasterboard on the walls. I bought M&K speakers for the rears as they are compact, tripole for the side surrounds and fit flat to the wall (plus they're white). Ceiling speakers are a bit 'final' in that if you deceide to rearrange the seating or just don't like the effect then you're stuck with them or a messy clean up job to remove them.

I would avoid ceiling speakers for 5.1. You will never get a decent surround setup with the speakers pointing at the floor.

Go for wall mounted at the correct height, or floorstanders.

If you really don't have the space a decent 3.1 setup or soundbar will be better than speakers mounted in the ceiling trying to do surround (unless you get the cool motorised ones which at least make some attempt to point the sound in the right direction)

I've had a 5.1 in the ceiling before BUT the more I think about it the more it makes sense to not go this route - firstly for the proper effect and secondly as the HDMI cables for the TV are in the wall and run to the corner of the room ready for connection to an audio/video source. Running the speakers from here means I can run it under the carpet (as the flooring won't be going down for a few weeks yet) to some floor standing speakers.

Next Q - what's a good quality home cinema set-up that does not cost the earth? Thinking of going the 50" 21:9 Philips TV with a Freesat box and then it's a case of which receiver/blu-ray/speaker set-up. Any suggestions - happy to go up to £2K get me something decent or can I get away with less?

I've got Anthony Gallo speakers for my 5.1 setup, and the rears are ceiling mounted. No issue with them at all.

Wall mounted under the TV, also using the same ceiling mounts as the rears. Allows you to adjust the direction of the speakers.

That's what I thought - I was originally thinking off all ceiling fitted which is what I've now moved away from.

Given they're adjustable, ceiling mounting them at the front would have worked. I chose not to as there's a door that's usually open and would have been in the path of one of the speakers.

Sorry we were at crossed purposes. I was thinking flush ones - i.e. non adjustable.

I've got flush fit ones in other rooms, and the Gallos in the lounge. The Gallos stick out about half an inch from flush, and they're only small to start with, so they're in no way intrusive.

They also sound better.

This is what they look like:

I can lay cables under the carpet if I do not go ceiling mounted for a full 5.1 or 7.1 system so easy to get a proper system for not much effort.

Just to complete this thread...spoke to the cable guys doing the house today and he said they can run ceiling speakers as they have access before the upstairs carpets go down - so I'm going to go with these at the front and possibly at the rear too in the living room and the rest of the house is for music only so can go flush mount.

Cheers Dan!

BTW Dan - do you have the ADiva or Nucleus Micro speakers?

Tempted to bite the bullet on the ADiva for better sound but not sure if needed. I'll obviously go and listen as the dealer is only a few miles away
