Anyone else hate this advert with a passion ? basically it says that if you don't buy a Golf you aspire to owning one but are a bit of a chimp, you probably cant afford one anyway, its so Smug.
There is a the down at heel salesman trying to sell a car to a dopey, scruffy, not very attractive, unconvinced looking woman on the basis of the door sounding "Like a Golf", not like the cheap POS it is. Then there are the goons in the garage with the modified car that has a baffled sump and double overhead cams "Like a Golf" and then some excitable knob in a Corsa or something skidding it round a car park as it Handles "Like a Golf".
Then we see a good looking chap in his late twenties, early thirties, slim, shirt untucked nipping across nonchalantly to his Golf, he is the real deal, not some chavvy wanabe, he drives a Golf (probably an Audi in a couple of years), you too can be like him if you pay over the odds for a Volkswagen.
I think Ford or someone should do an advert and have a subtle go back, I really hate the smugness and implications of the VW ad and it partially explains the legions of cretins driving round like they own the place in diesel Golf's

I really dislike chips on shoulders. It's so... unattractive. In every way. There is a the down at heel salesman trying to sell a car to a dopey, scruffy, not very attractive, unconvinced looking woman on the basis of the door sounding "Like a Golf", not like the cheap POS it is. Don't hate me but I quite like the ad - and don't think its that smug at all...
It plays on the fact that for the first few decades after its launch the Golf was considered the out and out leader in its class (hence the expression 'like a golf'!) and implies that its no longer one of the most expensive cars in its class.
What's not to like?
Would you prefer a less self serving advert?

I hate any car advert that tells you nothing about the car they are selling.
The BMW 1 series is a good example of a manafacturer selling a car to people who know fk all about cars.
aspirational products, they are selling a lifestyle not a productThe BMW 1 series is a good example of a manafacturer selling a car to people who know fk all about cars.
