Six months backbreaking and dangerous work for a measly six grand.

Perhaps the government could employ them to build the tunnels for the new high speed rail line, they've got to be cheaper than the £32 billion costs quoted so far.

You have to admit, it is a pretty impressive effort! hehe

It does make you wonder, doesn't it, what percentage of criminals would be far richer if they put the same amount of thought and effort into legal activities instead?

Well unless two different groups had the same idea then this was their second attempt, fairly well organised and tenacious group of hard working men.
Shame they chose crime as a career.

I't must be quite hard to dig a tunnel for 100 feet and then surface in exactly the right place... think there might be something more to this.

Police are looking into it. hehe

...but for the love of God; why when the most the cash-machine can carry is £20,000?

As the plan worked they aren't particularly stupid IMO.

I'd agree there must be easier ways to steal £6k though.

I think the police should be looking at local skip hire businesses - how else would a profit be made unless free skips were available for removal of spoilage?

I imagine you could use a GPS tracker to mark the route and location of the ATM then plug it into a laptop and follow the results. Something like this:

ETA: Also, this could merely be practise for something bigger.

How do they know it took six months?

If it took a month i'd say £6k split even three isn't a bad haul. A lot less time inside than you'd get for armed robbery too.

Surley all they had to do when the tunnel was completed was stake out the machine until it was re filled, then strike.

If crims are going to put a lot of effort in then at least this way nobody got mugged,no houses burgled etc etc

GPS tracker above ground, walk back from the ATM to the position you start, that gives you all the information you need, ie, dig forward 2metres, turn right 40degrees, forward another 6 metres, etc, etc.
