Archbishop of Canterbury to quit

BBC said:
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams to stand down

Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams has announced he is to stand down in December.

He is stepping down and will take the position of Master of Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge from January 2013, his website says.

Dr Williams, 61, was appointed the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury in 2002.

In a statement on his website, the head of the 77 million-strong the Anglican Communion said serving as archbishop had been "an immense privilege".

He said stepping down had not been an easy decision.

He added that during the time remaining there was "much to do" and thanked those in the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion who had "brought vision, hope and excitement" his ministry.
Sentamu has talked a lot more sense than Williams over the years in my opinion.

He'll be able to spread his interesting views to the students of Magdalene College now. Very strange man.

Much as I agree with the gist of your post, I think describing the head of the Anglican Church as a "mid-level manager" is somewhat hyperbolic. I guess there's only the Queen and their God above him in that organisation hehe

That said, he's going on the be Master of a Cambridge College, so another archaic organisation although not outdated IMO.

Sentamu is the natural choice for successor.

I'm not religious at all but I'm sorry to see him go. He is a very intelligent and informed guy who said what he felt needed to be said regardless of his own popularity, which is more than we can expect from our politicians. He's taken some very commendable and unpopular stances over the years and he's one of the people I'd pat on the back and say "job well done".

I've always loved the description of Rowan Williams as "looking like a Ewok peering through a hedge"

Let's have someone less political this time, please. We have politicians for that.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

I would expect that outcome.

About time the CofE modernised the office of the AofC.

Anachronistic and remote, currently, it could do with a slice of humility which I do think Sentamu has.

He also has a relationship with the common man which I admire. Heard him speak many times I admire the man.

And I am not even a believer!

I'm not sure he is. He just says what he feels needs to be said and as no-one else has the balls to say it, it makes some headlines. If Sentamu gets the job then I'll be interested to see how that pans out. He's a far more slick operator but I'm not sure that's what the job is about.

Very glad to see Williams on the way out. It's been downhill since Michael Ramsey and the current whiskery communist in a frock saw himself more as a politician than a cleric.

Just had a quick Google of your suggestion,

"Richard Christopher Wakeman (born 18 May 1949) is an English keyboard player, composer and songwriter. He went on to feature on songs by artists including Ozzy Osbourne..."

"He is also known for contributing to the BBC series Grumpy Old Men."

Sounds ideal!

Can be a bit "grumpy" though.

He's my second choice.
