How to Claim a Country....
Discussion
How would you go about claiming a country as belonging to you?
Is it as easy as 'dissappearing' the ruler and announcing that you are now in charge, or would you have to rock, paper, scissors for it?
Would you have to overthrow the King, or the government, or the Army chiefs?
Just what is it that would get you sitting on the 'big chair', in the eyes of international law?
Disclaimer: I am not planning on actually invading anywhere. Yet.

Go gather up enough very tough ex-army types. Go buy plenty of weapons. Find a defensible island or area that isn't populated. Go draw a line round it and declare your independence.
If anyone feels strongly enough to try and come and take it from you - repel them with deadly force.
Basically make it more trouble than it is worth for any external power to try and enforce governance on you.
Keep doing this a few hundred years. In time more recognised countries will sign treaties with you. Eventually the UN will recognise you and that's when you can join the international community as a fully fledged country.
But the first thing any country needs is an army. Well-armed, highly trained and most important - effective at what they do.

That's great for creating a country...but what about taking one?If anyone feels strongly enough to try and come and take it from you - repel them with deadly force.

A country that is already a country. For example - Zimbabwe; What would it take for me to be king? Would it be a case of just beating up the incumbent ruler and declaring myself head of state? What is stopping the likes of Bill Gates or any of the super-rich gathering up an army and paying a visit?

So if myself and a few friends in the Cornish Liberation Front shut the Tamar brigde and block the A30 I could become king and ruler of all of the Independant State of Cornwall ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)
Then the petrol stations of the UK would have to barter with me to get enough Ginsters pasties for the fridges. I think 100 litres tractor diesel (red) per box should be the starting point.
Eden project would be at a premium for science fiction/ action film hiring.
The national flag would be a gorgeous green tractor, with 8 cars in convoy behind.
Our national dish would be clotted cream.
Right, im off to get some weapons..![shoot](/inc/images/shoot.gif)
oh..I would have my castle based in Boscastle, with a big round table![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

(1) Eradicate any opposition through the use of deadly force. Basically kill anyone who says "no you're not" when you say "I am king". Do this for at least a hundred years.
(2) Bribe everyone else. Convince them that life under YOU will be better than it was under the old regime. The tools required are propaganda, you'll need control over ALL the media, and violence towards any dissenting voices.
What it comes down to is you and your army killing the death out of anyone who says it ain't so. For long enough that no-one gives a s
