The Blue Sky thread.
Discussion
I will start off by saying that I do not have a tin foil hat issue, I am not a conspiracy theorist, I am not paranoid and do not enjoy journeys of fantasy in my own mind.
Since the ash cloud has grounded flights over the uk for a number of days now I have noticed the skys above Cornwall have been clear and blue, the sun comes up in the morning and the sky is clear and blue and the sun goes down in the evening leaving the same clear sky.
We had a day where there were some real fluffy clouds but they seem to have blown away again.
On a normal day I get up and leave for work and there are a few thin trails in the sky following the aircraft leaving them, these trails mostly dissapear at a similar rate to the aircraft generating them but a little way behind. Other aircraft operating in the sky at the same time seem to leave trails that can last all day, these all day trails spread out and merge into a blanket of misty "sheen" that turns the sky, well, foggy.
Now a quick google turns up a lot of pissed off people claiming they are chemical trails or similar. It would seem a whole tin-foil hat subculture exists around these lingering trails.
I have got no idea what I am seeing, I noticed this a while ago and was wondering about it but since the Ash cloud the skys really are much bluer and cleaner than I have seen them before.
Is there a difference in the fuels the airliners use that could explain the trails ? several aircraft are visible at the same time normally yet only one might be emitting a lingering trail, does height make a difference ?
I am in Penzance so I am not close to major airports.
What is happening ?
Ps: I posted this in here rather than the lounge, I did think about the Planes section but was not sure if it was a bit too "current affairs" sorry if I got it wrong !

It's called weather.
It'll be all grey and orrible again soon.
No, you didnt read the post. It'll be all grey and orrible again soon.
I know about weather, I am asking about the fact that any normal non-volcano-grounding-planes day the nice blue sky is ruined by lots of joining up aircraft trails that combine to make a cloudless day sort of misty/foggy/smoky.

SpringAnd that its nice that its not happening and that I would like to know why some planes leave trails and not others.

Sure I read somewhere that with no clouds at the moment, temperatures will be 1-2 degrees warmer.
Which extrapolated means that planes are cooling the planet, not warming it up. But that won't work with the greenies now...

Maybe a similar effect to what happened in the US after 9/11 when all flights were grounded. Clearer skies than typical. Google 'Global Dimming'.
I remembered talk of this, and kept an eye on the skies (London). First two days were grey and cloudy, eventually breaking up. Right now there are some wispy clouds. The warmer weather was predicted and overdue. So I'm holding off on the whole dimming thing for the time being. Let's see how it rolls through the week.
But the same "plane made" cloud cover could trap warm air in the atmosphere too though, meaning the day ground temp is higher but night is cooler.
I can see this topic could easily slide off to conspiracy territory although its slip may be justified when you consider the Warmist/coolist nonsense going on in the world at the moment.

Tonight the stars will be more visable than for a long time.
The effect of these trails is to cloud the sky, Why ? How ?

It's the diesels that leave the contrails.Getragdogleg said:

It's just a clear day (high pressure I assume), contrails/vapour trails are just water, effectively artificial clouds. They occur because steam from combustion condenses in the very cold temperatures of the upper atmosphere.Tonight the stars will be more visable than for a long time.

This wiki is pretty good and mentions the theory that when planes don't fly/create contrails the earth actually warms up as less energy is reflected.
