One thing that I have observed is that the "left" really don't like it when the horrible truth of life outside kensington is shoved brutally in their faces.

No pun intended.

Sick that is. I have never really been addicted to anything though so I don't know what its like...I know how ratty the GF gets when she has not had a fag so I can only assume drugs would be worse, even so, I don't think dependance on anything would drive me to do something like that no matter how desperate...

It is his fault. No-one forced him to. I am just glad he got 10 years - though I wish he got far worse.

Yes, I don't get it, nowhere in the article or the comments is anyone making excuses for what he did...

There is some truth in the adage that an addict is a gluttton with a lawyer.

i agree, and i was also outraged like some of the comments where to find the attempted murder charge was dropped and yet he admitted trying to smother the lady. is that not attempted murder, sounds like it to me, perhaps its just as well for the scrotes of this world that i am not a judge.

Who knows, but it probably saved her life that night.

Because that's what old people do.

My Gran had a stroke and when me and my Mum got to the hospital she had her handbag with her so my Mum took it for safe keeping and wanted to be sure everything was in it that should be - this also turned out to include around £3k in tens and twenties.

Yup, my Gran gets £500 out of the bank in cash to last her the month. The trouble is, having dementia, she will go in to town 2-3 times a week and withdraw the money. When my Dad got Power of Attorney for her affairs she had £12K in her current account and her cheque book had 5 blank cheques already signed ready to go to the bank and withdraw her "monthly allowance".

If you have an old person in your family like this, ffs check what they are doing. They are a liability to themselves when there are scum like Damien Lightwood on the streets.

My Mum is a bit obsessed with going to the cashpoint, but we don't 'allow' her to keep that sort of cash around. Not condoning the scumbag's actions at all, btw.

Old people don't trust banks (probably with good reason!).

They stop receivng benefits if they have a certain amount of money in the bank, so they withdraw money to keep the balance down...

Jesus H Christ - look at the mess he made of her.

10 years in prison is far too good for him.

Oh I don't know, 10 years could be about right if they just lock him in a cell until he has gone cold turkey with no assistance, then release him into the general prison population where the others really don't like this type of crime, and make sure 10 years is 10 years not 5 years and time off for good behaviour, as this would be equivalent to 20 years under normal rules.

tbh, my Mum looked quite a bit like that last time she fell over. Very hard to judge injuries from the look of older people's bruises
