R.I.P

Horrible way to start the year, cracking actor and will be missed. I never realised he was a local lad to me as well.

What awful news. Great actor and not that old? Loved him in the Usual Suspects, Brassed off and In the Name of the Father especially. RIP.

He was a fantastic actor who never came to the fore for the wrong things. I thought that in Brassed off his portrayal of the conductor who had pnuemonicosis from the mines was oscar worthy if only those who dish them out knew what it was. Coming from a mining area his was as near as it gets to having it.

condolences to his family and friends

Saw him in lots of stuff, you really don't know what you've got till it's gone. Bit like when Freddie Mercury died, British show business will never be the same again...

A sad, sad loss.

A great actor, seemingly underrated and - from what I've learned over the years - just a normal bloke from Church Stretton

Spielberg once described him as "the best actor in the world". High praise indeed.

Except when he compared those who don't agree with MMGW to holocaust deniers

At least he wasn't a hypocrite, deluded, yes but no hypocrite.

"Postlethwaite said he did not want to be hypocritical about climate change so he and his wife Jacqui Morrish have done extensive work to their rural Shropshire home to make it as green as possible. They have reduced their carbon footprint by almost 60 tonnes in the past year by adding a small wind turbine, better insulation and a wood-burning stove. They export much of the electricity produced by the wind turbine back to the grid."

He was quite left-wing in his views so may have found the average PHer a little hard to accept, to be honest.

Still, a fine actor and one who will be missed.
