If you don't want Tesco's
Discussion
Looks like they have gone one store too far.

I've been wondering when a community whose views are ignored would finally snap at a "planning" decision.

Having been involved at an intimate distance during the planning and opening (owned a pub at the crossroads down to St Pauls) Tesco were shortsighted to have not heeded the severe lack of local support.
The store is probably less than a kilometre of another 4 Tesco Supermarket/Express/Metro stores.
That said, the actions of local 'anarchists' is despicable.

How many of them are residents though?http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-13169...

Also how many of those residents will use the store?
Some people complain about the fact Tesco is taking over, simple fact is if you don't like don't use.
They are only taking over as they can afford, they can only afford as people buy from them instead of using local shops.

People from a squat didn't want a tesco near so rioted when it opened?
Pay your tax and/or rent and you'll have a say, until then fk off you whinging freeloaders.
Police should have baton charged the lot of them.
Agreed. I was dozing on the sofa after a nightshift last night and had the TV on in the background on the BBC News channel. I heard the presenter saying something along the lines of, "the police used disproportionate force" and wondered what it was about so went online and saw it was about squatters with petrol-bombs. "Disproportionate force" - I don't think so, not enough force.Pay your tax and/or rent and you'll have a say, until then fk off you whinging freeloaders.

Really, how do the beeb get away with it?

do love a simplistic view...have you thought that Tesco perhaps undercut the local shops on purpose and are able to because of the economies of scale?
So people do prefer Tesco then as they offer cheaper prices.Mass buying power, if people really didn't like it they wouldn't use. That is a simplistic view, an accurate one also.

how do they get away with reporting what a bystander said? You weren't listening properly were you, you can hardly justifiably get annoyed at something you half heard.Really, how do the beeb get away with it?
In the words of the Kaiser Chiefs, "I predict a[nother] riot". I've just been on a bike ride around Bristol and swung by the scene on the way back. Damage doesn't look too horrific apart from Tesco's windows, however there's paint. Everywhere! Where do they get it from?!
The squat in question is still occupied and there are a vast number of crusties generally mingling and monging around in the sun outside. I can see it seriously kicking off again tonight.
A vast number of my colleagues were involved in this last night, very long shift for some and someone I've known for a long time has apparently badly broken his wrist. I'm on nights tonight too so a little apprehensive!
The fact is, whilst no doubt there are several Tesco stores not too far away, it's the densely populated heart of the city. It's not like they are pushing another local greengrocer out of business as there really aren't any on this bit of road. There are a few tramp booze shops slightly farther into town.
Legitimate protest is fine, it's been going on before the shop opened, and there has been a low-key demonstration outside since it opens. The actions of the utter morons last night are not legitimate protest. It's nothing short of rent-a-mob wanting a scrap. That squat has been trouble for ages and decisive action was needed, stuff all this trustafarian bks about "Police oppression" because it was a restrained, professional operation targeted at a specific threat. The scores of onlookers probably didn't help either...
