My "current" card says quite clearly on it that it expires "end of" 06/09.

They've sent me a new one but I'm a lazy sod and why did I need to bother so long as I swapped the one in my wallet before the "end of" 06/09?

I'll tell you why, because Lloyds arbitrarily cancel the "old" card a few days prior to when it expires.

Thought I'd post in case it helps anyone avoid the hassle of having it happen to you in a supermarket.

Lloyds have confirmed this, have they? Or was your card declined for one of the myraid other reasons that they do so for?

Yes, I called them the moment I got home.

Old card simply canceled, new card (glued to letter) totally fine to use.

When I get a new card, I use it immediately. Sounds like your own laziness was your problem! had you activated the new card?

I thought you couldn't use a card before it's "valid from" date? Many replacements cards have no overlap with the old one.

No as the letter said I didn't need to do so. The letter also didn't say that they would cancel my old one at some arbitrary point prior to the date it says it expires.

Lazy on my part, yup. Totally unacceptable from Lloyds, yup too, IMO.

Slightly OT, but my credit card has recently changed hands (LLoyds sold to Barclaycard), so they issued a new card & pin etc.
Anyway, after etching the new pin into my memory, i i then forgot the new pin & had to call Barclaycard for a new one to be issued.

During the chat that ensued, i mentioned that i needed the pin for a forthcoming trip abroad, at which point the call cenre chappie asked when i was going, when was i coming back, where was i going etc, requesting some fairly detailed information that i declined to give.

He then got his manager, who confirmed that Barclaycard now require you to contact them prior to travel & confirm dates & times/locations etc or here will be "an 80% chance that your card will be stopped if we see transactions abroad & you have not given us prior notice of your travel plans"

Anyone else slightly uncomfortable with this?

...but does it say to start using using it immediately and to destroy the other card.?

Yes it does, but it says to "Please..." - not "Oh and the expiry date on your current card isn't actually the date it expires, we made that bit up".

Like I said I admit to being lazy and possibly making assumptions, but equally I could be on holiday or in the arse end of absolutely nowhere with no access to the new card, and one in my wallet that says it's still fit for use.

You'll be more uncomfortable if you try and use your HSBC credit and debit cards in Thailand and they've stopped them both because you didn't tell them you were going away for 2 months. So then you can stand on a beach with a 3 grand bill and a flight to catch and no way of paying anyone, anything.

ETA Oh, and I forgot to add that if your (second) car insurance is on an automatic annual renewal then that won't work either, because now you've finally got through to Mumbai and told HSBC that you're not in the fking UK and what fking business is that of theirs, they stop the card from being used anywhere else than Thailand so UK transactions don't work which makes your insurance lapse.

NatWest here, my last one didn't overlap with the one before it but the replacement has a start date a month earlier than the expiry date of the one it replaces. However it only lasts for 2 years and 1 month instead of 3 years like they used to.

If National Service was brought back then people would get used to obeying instructions again.

I suppose if the instruction was more forceful then people would start crying and saying their human rights had been breached.

Yep, the twunts do it to me too even though I've been working abroad in the same schedule for the last 8 years. They've blocked my card about 6 times this year and cost me a chunk in expensive roaming rates just to get it reactivated. It's their Fraud Dept that put the block on it.
Earlier in the year I was travelling down to Italy by car. I had a string of cash withdrawals on my Barclays A/C and a string of payments on my Barclaycard (Tunnel/Fuel/Hotel in France). You would think it would be bleedin obvious of what I was doing and a rough guess of possible destinations but nooo. First time I used the card in Italy. Blocked. Useless tts. They now put a rolling 6 months overseas marker on my cards to try and stop it blocking me because the next time will be the last and I'll take my chances with someone else.

I work abroad, and have the same problem with the bank blocking my card, which is why I always travel with about a grand in my pocket... Just in case!

It doesn't need to be forceful, just factual would do.

If the letter said "We will cancel your existing card on the 27th" or whenever they actually did do so I'd have swapped cards.

To be fair the Lloyds cards overlap. My old one runs out end of June, but the new one is valid from May onwards smile

My First Direct debit card expires at the end of this month.

Unfortunately, they don't use Royal Mail like any normal bank and use a private postal firm to send out the new cards. This private firm won't leave the cards without my signature, and will only deliver during working hours Monday to Friday. I cannot be at home during these hours and they won't post to my work address!
