I have just had a tree taken down and am left with a stump. What do I need to do to it? Will it try to grow back or will it rot? It is about 18" diam.

we did this receintly ...

what you need is

1) - a tractor type thing.
2) - 10 meters of strong rope.

Tie rope around stump and make one more turn so that the pull will be a twist.

Tie other end of rope to tractor and slowly drive forwards "twisting" the stump out.

Ecxpect any walls, paving, slab in the vicinity to also be ripped up biggrin

what type of tree is it?

often they will grow back with new shoots, rarely they will start to rot, occasionally they will do nothing and just sit there for ever.

You can get a paint which you paint on the stump which prevents it from re-growing, but for the life of me i can't remember what its called. you can also dig the stump up- probably a days work, or you can have the stump ground to below eath level.

Mrs Maul started chopping down a conifer and got it down to about the same. We just dug the roots out, hacked a few to bits with a saw and with a healthy does of brute force and ignorance, levered the rest out. Now I have to re-turf the whole garden to make it look nice......

I used an axe, a lenght of chain and a Passat 4motion.

Remember to leave the boot open to catch the flying stump in. Makes it easier to take it to the tip after.

Was asking someone about this recently, as I also have a tree stump that I want rid of.

I was told that by drilling holes into the stump and filling them with diesel, the stump will just crumble into nothingness.

May need to repeat a couple of times, but am told it will definitely do the job - nice and cheap too!

You need one of these. You can clearly see the removed stump infront of the fella in green

Dig right around it, then hit it with a big axe.
If you can't 4x4 it out, its massive work.
Axe, axe, and axe again.
Smash it to bits.

Another option is to dig around the stump at ground level, creating a pit.Buy yourself some BBQ charcoal and ighting fluid and keep the fire going for a few hours, it'll gradually eat the stump away. You can combine this with a few beers and man's need to make fire, and it'll be a laugh. As soon as it's below ground level, let it die out.

I've never tried this technique,'cos I have a Unimog with a big mofo winch.

My pops did it with the Discovery, I am sure he mentioned there is some poison you get, tip it onto the stump and it gets absorbed into the trunk and roots and kills it all

a Disco will work with my approach too ... just have to make sure that you have a twist / torque action rather than a straight pull then the bugger is comming out easy!

disclaimer, anything i say is hearsay and bks, at no point can i be held liable for wreacked 4x4's, walls, patio's or other structures ... advice is taken at your own risk, sold as seen etc etc etc .... 5 year garuntee, just can't garuntee that i will be her ein 5 minutes ....

I had the same problem a few years ago - I wanted the whole stump out so it wouldn't regrow so a stump grinder wasn't the best option for me. I tried the usual digging around it for about a day but really wasn't getting anywhere - 'like a hen scratching' my dad said observing this...

I ended up hiring a winch for the day which I wrapped around a bigger tree and the stump which I wanted out and gradually tightened the winch with the 3ft long bar they give you. After about 10 mins the stump popped out without too much of a problem.

They did give up some 3ft long pins as well which you are supposed to be able to use as a ground anchor if you don't have another tree to use as the anchor but I didn't try these.

I thought that there was a chemical you could get which you pour on the stump and it kills the roots so that you can remove the stump easily.

Stump grinder is the normal way. Did the people cutting it down not offer to remove it? Any good tree surgeon should be able to remove the stump too with a grinder.

This is what I am wanting.
The stump is in an awkward place you can't get a tractor or car to. There are no trees around and I can't have a fire.
I may try the Diesel route though. Any one else tried that?
