There have been a few threads on Bali in general however I'm off there in May
and was looking for some hotel recommendations from the PH faithful.

Was thinking of the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel http://www.nusaduahotel.com/
but was wondering if going 5* is necessary in Bali or would a 4* be good enough (the missus is fussy, I see the extra expense as an insurance policy only)

Thanks

I'd say location is far more important than actual hotel. The best hotel in the world is a waste of time if there's a 24hr bar right next to it. Bali has the extremes - absolutely idilic beaches, and Kuta (think the Aussies version of Ibiza). Choose youre location and then find a hotel. I only spent a couple of days there in a $30 special in Seminyak so can't help too much, but found Seminyak noticably quieter and more couples oriented than Kuta. Can't vouch for the rest of the island. For the $30 I paid I got a basic clean hotel room with aircon, pool, breakfast and 100yrds from the beach. Free transfers and everything. Can't complain! Would probably upgrade a bit if on honeymoon though!

I can highly recommend:

http://www.alampurivilla.com/villaarka.asp

I got it for a little over £50 a night and its fantastic

If you want to do some diving get across to gili trawangan:

http://mydiveonline.com/dive-operator/gili-trawang...

http://www.manta-dive.com/diving-accommodation-gil...

Cost me £35 a night for the bungalow and £20 for diving.

Forgot to say Alam puri is in Ubud so its far enough away from the ibiza section but close enough to go there is wanted.....

Get a motorcycle when there, they are about £2-3 a day.

Gili trawangan can only be got to on a speedboat and is 2 1/2 hours for the trip, but if you sit at the back its good fun, but you will need to book the boat before going there to make sure you get a spot.

How on earth did you get that for 50 a night? Their website gives rates of $200 upwards.

Good work in any case :-)

Simple:

http://www.asiarooms.com/indonesia/bali/alam_puri_...

http://www.indo.com/hotels/alampuri/

http://travel.hotels-and-discounts.com/hotel/prope...

Never go direct and use the above and you will always get a deal smile

I went last august and got it for £50, it looks like you can get it for 60-70 and above, but a little bit of searching should reduce the rate a little more.

i can highly recommend Oberoil Bali in Seminyak- went 2 yaers ago and had the best holiday i am ever likely to have.

Hotel and service were truly maginificent- expecially the service. If you can get an upgrade to a villa- they have there own pools and they are really very very good!

Get yourself a s made while you're there.

I paid £23 for a suit and jacket - decent enough material - 5 years ago - its still the best fitting suit i've got and its still going strong.

Agree with Duncan. Kuta is for Aussie clubbers and backpackers only.

Bali resorts vary massively in character, so research where you want to go first. Seminyak and Legian probably among the better places.

Inland, however, is Ubud...historically a hippie place, it's broadened it's appeal now and is a genuinely welcoming, laid back and nice place to be. We stayed at the Alila Ubud about 10mins outside of town, which had amazing service, a first-rate spa (massages etc.), and some absolutely stunning views over a forested valley...if you're thinking of Ubud DO check it out...still one of the most memorable places we've stayed in.

Final option - Lombok is just across the water but is quieter and more 'exclusive'.

Temples and the monkeys.... ahh yes.... remember to buy a few bags of nuts for them and they will be your best mate..... for added effect throw nuts at other unsuspecting tourists and dont ask why the guides carry rocks...

The fire dance on the other hand is surreal.... worth watching again.

Anyone go and see the temple that is out on rock 50m off the main land?
