I genuinely don't have any, other than to reach the next birthday. Although I suppose one day I won't be too bothered about that one either I guess.

Goals are for the weak.

“Those who are motivated only by desire for the fruits of action are miserable, for they are constantly anxious about the results of what they do.”

I am 50, I have started to realise two things that I need to look after my health more and work harder on my finances/retirement and my plan to get off the work treadmill.

Short term : I have been having some issues with my teeth recently, five dentist appointments this month and I am getting there. The mortgage on my BTL expires at the end of September, I am currently trying to get the best deal possible.

Medium term : Improve my financial situation. This is a five year plan, I want to continue over paying my mortgage by 10% a year and pay as much as I can into my pension.

Long term : Get myself in a position where I can retire when I want. Be mortgage free and able to live off my BTL income and private pension until the state pension kicks in at (probably not) 67.

Basically the goal is to live as stress free and happy life as possible. Financial security and not having to work anymore are a massive part of this.

I'm 52 soon, no kids, comfortable with 2 decent salaries.

Had nice expensive cars, no desire to do that again. Don't need a bigger house.

Current thoughts are what the hell am I doing it for? What do I do when I don't work any more? And why.

20s/30s/40s very simple - work hard to get nice things and be able to retire. But then do what?

Very confused.

short term: make it to the end of the working week without battering someone to death. Enjoy the weekend doing hobbies and family time. Rinse and repeat next week

Medium term: tick off as many things I have always wanted to do. Bike trips / holidays / experiences

Long term: Retire as early as financially possible and do even more of my medium term goals. biggrin

I’ve mostly stopped caring about having a big house, lots of money and a highly paid career. I’ve changed to spending most of my time and money enjoying myself travelling around seeing places and exploring. I’m in my 40s and ok financially. This isn’t the norm on this forum.

My short term goal is to get through a 400km hike in the wilderness.

Except the $30k a year annual 'council' (property) tax will likely more than double in no short time.

Satisfy my curiousity. Do no harm. Fulfil some potential.

Croak.

I don't have any material or work goals.

Short term: close a couple more sales deals at work…. They’re all long lead times, so working on them for 2+ years!
Medium term: get Dort V2 installed in another country and city, again, for her Masters
Long term: still be alive when she gets her Masters….. wink

How funny you picked that house. I was in St Charles last week. My brother lives in 60174!
My brothers property tax is “only” $10k / year…. Gulp.
If it wasn’t for stupid property taxes, I’d live in 60174 too. Love it there.

I'm 36 and I am not sure.... Carry on existing for a while, I guess?

I've nothing to complain about, really; I've got my health, decent mates and family, I've travelled and continue to do so, I'm comfortable financially (no kids ftw), but I am hardly loving live and waking up every morning, ready to seize the day, either party

I'm 29

Short term: Finish my degree (engineering bachelors) - I don't 'need' it, but after 7 years of doing it in my spare time I'm glad to see the back of it in a few months. Getting married in a few weeks. Get out and about more, whether that's alone on my bike or with the dogs and partner.

Medium term: Build up savings, light refurb on the house. Side-step out of engineering into something slightly different - Not sure what yet though.

Long term: Buy a place with a bit of land somewhere quieter. Try and be a bit more self sufficent in terms of growing stuff, solar etc. Quiet life smile

Nothing too extreme biggrin

Similar to you. I'm 50 next month.

Short term: Health. I got a ticking off at a health check so reduce alcohol consumption, eat better and I'm halfway through the couch to 5 k again.

Medium term: Position myself financially for early retirement (60). I have max holdings in NS&I as my emergency fund, cleared my debts apart from the mortgage so no car payments, loans, credit cards, etc. I'm investing and have good savings. The biggest thing for me is to keep my current car and not go and splash out unnecessary money on another car.

Long term: Retirement. I have so many hobbies and interests that I can't wait to spend more time on them.

Agree hardest thing I found with retirement was my brain thinking, I have to work to survive. My brain was programmed for the last 40 years 24/7 to think, I must work and preserve my ability to retain a job, otherwise my life will implode, I will lose my house and everything I know.

Now I find the concept of work, something that seems very alien to me. Its amazing how other things now take precedence and something always comes along that needs attention. Our current goal is to do as much as we can whilst we have our health. We spend 6+ months a year overseas , both in our second home and a month exploring and when we are back we are sorting our the house, gardens etc. Honestly never bored, just look for the next thing to do. We are off to the Chelsea flower show this week, meeting up with some friends, then next week back off on holidays. Its huge world out there and so much to explore.
