Before setting off to work this morning, noticed there was a report on how fat people should not be ridiculed or abused physically/verbally in public because that would be classed as a 'fat hate' crime.

Apart thinking it's another useless label put onto something that has been going since the year dot, obviously I wouldn't condone physical attack on someone just because of their weight - it's their choice and should be free to do what they like.

However the discussion always end up with they don't have a choice as they are genetically challenged therefore can't lose weight etc but without going all scientific it's no rocket science that if you eat more and do zero exercise you're more likely to resemble the Michelin man than Christiano Ronaldo.

As most of my work colleagues is made up of females, this was a topic of discussion this morning - cue lots of moaning whilst chomping on a packet of crisps wondering why/how they got so fat...

I'm fat and I don't bh about people having an opinion. I also don't complain about "not being able to lose weight". It isn't easy, but it's do-able.

Better to be fat than to have such a little life that the only thing you have to worry about is someone else's weight. I can lose the weight, but they'll always be a dick.

I don't blame anyone but myself. Does that make it OK to abuse me because it's been going on "since the year dot"?

Because most people think that nothing (bad) is their fault. Fatties generally also live in denial about what they actually eat and how much exercise they do. A personal trainer friend of mine had a very over weight client who swore blind that he only ate three normal, healthy meals a day and just couldn't understand why he was so fat. Eventually it came out that he also just HAD to have 5 chocolate biscuits everytime he had a cup of tea. And he had about 5 or 6 cups of tea a day.

Also, just because you get out of breath walking up a short flight of stairs once that doesn't mean that it constitues as 'a good amount exercise'.

If you're fat you've put more in that you've taken out. It's that simple. Yes, some 'skinny bhes' can eat all they want and never get fat and you only have to look at a cake and you put on weight. But it all comes down to the fact that if you've put it on you've put it in.

To be fair the excuse of 'big bones' is normally pretty accurate.

They do tend to miss out the 'covered in meat and gravy' part, but it's a start.

People can do as they please but it's when you get people who blame ads on TV and other influences that prevent them from losing weight - they have that choice. No one of forcing them to eat against their will.

I had a friend who was a dietician. She was the special forces of weight loss, and would be refered people who were beyond the help of lesser parts of the NHS due to their weight, or who needed to lose weight for an operation.

The highest (?) of the categories into which people were put was 'morbidly obese'. These people were classified as having a 'significant risk of death within 6 months' if they did not lose weight. Most insisted they did not over eat and had salad for almost every meal, and expected my friend to believe it. As a wake up call this is surely clarion like in its volume and intensity?

Apparently not. Many of these people refused to change their over-eating habits. Most of those who didn't change vaidated the original classification by ending up in a (very large) box within 6 months.

Not their fault, mind. In a blame-culture society it never is.

And yours too for being a tt? It's just a topic of discussion, it would seem some of you are as sensitive as some people discussing religion.

Fat people need to take responsibility. I am a little fat, and blame noone but myself. Not my parents, not my missus, not the supermarkets for selling fatty food, not MacDonalds for forcing me to eat 6 Big Macs in one sitting and not my doctor for failing to stop me getting fat.

I am the one responsible for what and how much I eat.

the first para of the OP is the only part which should be up for debate. Nobody should have to expect abuse for ANYTHING from other humans, whether it's 'their fault' or not. I'm overweight myself as I'm sure are the majority of PHers. I have recently lost over 2 stone by paying attention to the simple equation mentioned above and will continue to lose more weight by the same action. I don't blame anyone else for the size I was, nor do I expect anyone to give me a hard time about my weight.

The equation is simple, the issues around obesity much more complex. As with so many of today's social problems, poor education has a lot to do with it.

Although I am only moderately overweight, I would rather be a 50 stone fatty than be so devoid as something entertaining to say than a ridiculous unfunny slogan off, an unfunny repetitive TV ad.

That aside, look at the trends over the past few years. First it was the smokers, now its the overweight, what is next? Will there always be a witch to burn, or will people just learn to get on with their own lives and stop meddling in other peoples.

physical abuse no, but if we ban piss taking out of salad dodgers then put me in irons now.

we have 2 women in our building known as big bird 1 and big bird 2. they walk like crabs and would win any cankle contest hands down - they are even banned from using the lift at the same time! they are always at the front of the queue for bacon butties in the morning, but to be fair to them they donlt have butter as 'its fattening'.
