It would depend on whether you're playing 33's, 45's or 78's!!

it'll take off faster than usual ... the rotors are shaped so as to generate lift when rotated clockwise, unless the turntable has been modified to play in reverse, that is.

I think you'll find the aviation forum will send it straight back.

It belongs in the "Home Cinema & Hi-Fi" forum - since I need to know the best stylus for playing both vintage 1970's vinyl and small plastic helicopters.

Actually I think those Numark DJ decks can play forwards or backwards.nerd

And yes, it will definitely, unquestionably, certainly take off.

That did cross my mind ... I mean, who would try to launch a helicopter from a turntable? Then it struck me, perhaps THAT was the message you got when you played Sergeant Pepper backwards?

Forward: "It was twenty years ago today"
Backward: "Go an buy a remote controlled toy helicopter"
Forward: "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, we hope you will enjoy the show"
Backward: "The put it on this record and try to make it take off, put the video on Youtube when it's invented"

Am I right?

Yes, most probably as he's wrong anyway. The rotors would only create lift when turning anti-clockwise, (looking from above at least!!).

So effectively, if the turntable and rotors were turning in the assumed directions then it's ascent would be inhibited until such times as the revolutionary speed of the rotors exceeded that of the turntable and the two entities seperated, then it's ascent would accelerate considerably, providing of course the helicopter had an operational tail rotor to counteract the helicopters rotation.

While you're over there, mine's the faded tweed jacket with the elbow patches, here's my ticket...............

I predict that it will certainly take off.

Horizontally and embed itself in the nearest wall / leg / bass driver.

Depends whether the rotors are shaft driven or tip driven.

(A serious answer. That'll throw them.)

Considering the fastest a record deck can go (even in reverse) is 78RPM, a helicopter rotor rotates a lot faster. So yes.

  • If the turntable is spinning clockwise @ 45 RPM - it may take off as the additional speed will increase the lift.
  • If the turntable is spinning anticlockwise @ 45 RPM - it may still take off as the speed of the turntable compared to the speed of the blades will have a negligible effect.
  • If the turntable is spinning clockwise @ the same speed as the blades - it may take off as the additional speed will increase the lift.
  • If the turntable is spinning anticlockwise @ the same speed as the blades - it definately will not take off as the blades will be stationary relative to the surrounding air.
All the above is theoretical of course - what will actually happen is the helicopter will be spat off the turntable uncontrollably into the nearest wall and the cat will st itself and leg it under the dining table as bits of wallpaper and plastic rotor blade are showered across the room.

in my defence, it WAS late, and I was on my old laptop so it looked like the rotor blades were the other way round on the crap screen.

As another thought experiment, would it be possible to LAND a plane on a conveyor belt?
