It's good news that the opportunity is there and I hope she's at least as good if not better than what we have, which is all that should matter in the end. Good luck to her & hopefully she can become a role model for both better refereeing overall as well as modernisation of attitudes.

Hopefully this means players won't be so aggressive whenever they don't get their own way. I only have the slightest passing interest in football (work in a pub where it's always on, it's a case of either be bored stiff or learn to enjoy it) but the constant paddy-throwing and abusing of the officials really sours my view of the players.

Well Sian Massey is the best lines person we've ever had so no reason why she won't do a good job .... although men refs haven't exactly set a high bar have they

Your post is a little ambiguous so just in case - the first female Premier League ref on 23rd December is Rebecca Welch.

With VAR to fall back on, I think anyone could be a ref now.

I think they should trial a completely remote refereeing set up, whistle comes over the PA system, decisions shown on the big screen. 'Home throw in' etc.

I'd like to see the players argue and shout at no one.

Only ambiguous if you don't follow football because you'd know who Sian Massey is and you'd also know I wasn't referring to her in the 'she' comment

I expect the players will be a bit more respectful - have the fans learned to behave yet?

Hasn't been mentioned, but the game that she's taking charge of is Fulham vs Burnley (KO @ 15:00).

I can't see any downsides to this, as long as she is fit enough to keep up with play, which I'm sure she will be.

Good luck to her.

No problem at all with this.

If Andy Madley and Craig Pawson are deemed adequate enough then I'm sure Rebecca Welch will be an upgrade on those two clowns.

It's surprising in this day and age that it's such a 'thing'

If a new male ref was coming into his first game, would we say things like

"As long as he's good enough"

or

"As long as he's fit enough"

It would just be assumed that he is otherwise he wouldn't have been selected, just like we should assume the woman is otherwise she wouldn't have been.

Good luck to her.
