Bernie must be getting desperate ...

autosport said:
Formula 1 will award double points for its final round from the 2014 season in an effort to keep championship battles open longer.

The move was agreed by the F1 Strategy Group and the Formula One Commission at a meeting in Paris on Monday.

It will automatically become part of the regulations as the FIA World Motor Sport Council agreed last week to give the Strategy Group and Commission a mandate to agree rule changes on this occasion.

An FIA statement said that the change had been agreed "in order to maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign".

It applies to both the drivers' and constructors' championships, and means that the winner of the final grand prix next year will get 50 points, with 36 for second place and so on through the top 10.

Had that system been in place in recent years, it would have changed the outcome of both the 2012 and '08 title fights.

Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton won those crowns respectively by claiming sufficient minor points to stay ahead of rivals Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.

But under the new system, Alonso's second place at Interlagos last year would have given him enough points to leapfrog Vettel, while Massa's 2008 Brazilian GP victory would have denied Hamilton the championship on that occasion.

What a dreadful idea for a season long championship.

I honestly thought this was a joke and would be a link to a Sniff Petrol article or something.

What is he thinking? It seems a bit of a kneejerk reaction to Vettel's dominance, as we've had plenty of exciting showdowns without this feature.

Very artificial rolleyes

Abject nonsense.

I do wonder if they are beginning to get desperate.

Rather looks like a desperate knee-jerk reaction. They really don't get-it, fundimental changes are needed, not tinkering, Next it will be, if you win four races in a row, you have to tow a caravan for the next one........

Considering next year's rule change's with the loss of the V8's this seem's a strange decision. Maybe someone has seen a blueprint of Red Bull's car for next year already.

If you have a dominant year like this year, it would make no difference. If you have a tight year that goes down to the wire, it could be a complete travesty and might even mean the event is a complete dull finale as what may have been a fight to get into say 3rd, now becomes a complete waste of time as the points gap is too big to what you receive for first.

There is no logic here for a championship.

So Vettel will just win by even more points?

You will be pretty fked off if after a season you lose the Championship because for no reason the last race gives double points. At least make it double distance.

What an absolutely terrible idea. Can't we at least wait and see if next year shakes things up enough anyway?

Thinking more......it could make the championship a travesty. Just think of the outcome if someone does really up until the last race, then has a DNF. That DNF then becomes a potential loss of DOUBLE POINTS......The more you think, the more silly it becomes....

Drivers will also get permanent chosen numbers between 2 and 99, similar to MotoGP with Rossi #46 and Hayden #69 etc.

I wonder if Maaark would have chosen 2 hehe

Stupid rule.

They risk bringing the sport into disrepute with these ridiculous decisions.

And i don't care if they award 10000 points. Abu Dhabi is still crap for a season final..

fking idiotic.

Someone on twitter said that if these were the rules from 2007 the following would be true;

Hamilton -0WDC
Massa - 1WDC
Kimi - 2WDC
Vettel - 3WDC
Alonso - 3WDC

Totally would have changed the worthy outcome of a season and will do so from now on.
